French League Says No To The Poly Ball!

Post subject:  French League Says No To The Poly Ball!

Good on them I say! :clap: I hope other national associations will so the same.
These were their reasons:

- It is thought that manufacturers won't have enough supply on time (at least not until summer when players are in the pre-season) DHS informed that they haven't started the mass production, while Xushaofa informed that they have enough stock, but its ball won't be used in the 2014 and 2015 ITTF World Tour Circuit.
- The world production isn't ready yet.
- There is no enough stock currently, so no enough balls to train
- There is no information from manufacturers
- Celluloid balls will continue to be manufactured
- Clubs still have large stock of celluloid balls

Of course the year after they'll have to decide again, and may not have much choice.

Lets hope the yearly decision against the poly ball continues to be "NO!"

While I have mixed feelings about the president of the french federation, I approve this decision - bit it only concerns the amateur league.
No decision has been made yet for the pro league.

What I find disheartening is that the pro league probably has more impact on issues like, while the amateur level of table tennis has WAY more players in it.

Haha speaking of such things as this, the guys who runs our small club said he might consider just buying a bunch of 40mm celluloid balls from nittaku soon :P That way we'd have a stockpile. :lol:

If they do so, I'd recommend that they keep them in temperature controlled storage. I once found some very old 3-star celluloid balls that were packed by the dozen in plastic bags and then inside a cardboard box. They were then stored in a warehouse without temperature control (except heat in the winter). These balls were probably 20-25 years old when I examined inside the package. To my surprise, the balls were completely missing inside some of the plastic bags. Instead there was a pile of light yellowish powder. The only conclusion I could come up with is that the balls literally disintegrated into a powder. I also found quite a few with yellow stains all over the ball, kind of like aging spots. Other bags only had a few balls that were disintegrated, the rest seemed to be OK (I actually took some out and played with them).

I'd say this is a logical decision that is likely to be repeated by many other leagues and tournaments. This is also why I don't think there is going to be a mass switchover to the poly ball immediately after July 1st as has been postulated on another thread, especially for the amateur ranks.

I agree with you. There are simply not enough balls available to filter down to my level of play. I suspect it could be over a year until I start to see plastic balls on a regular basis in local club and local small tournament play.
