I asked Jo Drinkhall if she would be prepared to do an interview for OOAK. Jo (formerly Parker) is a classical defender, who plays with double inverted. She used SP previously, but went back to double inverted. She was England #1 before taking a break to have children. She was very enthusiastic, and didn't realise there was such a community of people interested in defending! I will curate questions, and send them to her, and will edit and post her answers.

So... questions for Jo please?

Wow, that's great LordCope

A few Qs that come to mind:

1. What made you decide to become a defender?
2. Why would you choose double inverted over short pimple or long pimple rubbers
3. Do you think it takes more effort / skill to become a defender compared to the more common 2-winged looper?

- What are some of the best tips you've received for choppers?

- How has the intro of the new plastic ball affected your game?

If there was one rule you could change (or change back), what would it be?

Would you like to see more defenders in the game? If so, how could this be encouraged, given that the overwhelming emphasis of most training/coaching programmes is to produce two-winged loopers?

How did you become a defender? Did you always play like this, or did someone suggest it? Did you admire someone in particular?

Is she related to Paul Drinkhall? If so, in what way? Wife, sister, cousin?

Also, what differences has she noticed in the game after returning from her break?

Well done on securing the interview LC!

Yes. They're married! She's actually pregnant with their second child so still won't be competing for another year or two. Mostly coaching.

1- Is there any technical advice you can share with us on how to you handle the very spinny loops at the higher levels with your inverted rubber? What I tend to do is use more wrist and compensate for the spin with bat speed as well as using the throw angle of the rubber to deal with the spin. I actually find higher throw rubbers are easier to deal the incoming spin because you can chop more horizontally and therefore really be aggressive with racket speed. What are your thoughts?

2- Have you tried slower non-tensor rubbers? Why do you prefer Tenergy for chopping?

Wanted to ask who was the beat ever player she played (ibam guessing Ding Ning) and how it felt playing her game.against her. Also wanted to ask whether she thinks there are any limitations of chopping with inverted at her level. Finally, would she change her style if she knew it would guarantee her better professional results.

Nothing back yet, but I'll be seeing her on Saturday, so I will ask her then.
