Really good 3-0 win by Henzell against Keinath in the Challenger Series today. So if everything goes according to form today, it'll be Henzell, Chtchetinine, Pattantyus and Keinath in the final four. Cool.
==========================
Looks like only four penholders out of 69 male Olympics singles qualifiers. They are: Wang Hao, Wang Zeng Yi, Hugo Hoyama and He Zhi Wen. Interestingly Wan Hao is the only RPH guy. The other three use one side only and two play with short pips!
==========================
Here's what the ITTF's Ian Marshall had to say about He, who by the way just turned 50. "...he uses a racket that no self-respecting modern day player would admit to owning! It’s from the local department store, the racket you hire for a game at the youth club."

If Ian thinks that, then he should buy it and he'll be playing like He in no time at all. Go Ian! :party:

The videos in that last post don't seem to be working, MNNB.

Seems to be working for me, but just in case here are the direct links:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzIUPXkn3_U

These matches really made me smile. Very unusual to see two top level defenders play each other (in a final, no less) and thoroughly enjoying to watch.

I was hoping they would have put one of Henzell's matches on YouTube. Here's a screen grab I did.

THE MOST CONTROL OF ANY TABLE TENNIS BLADE MADE TODAY?????

Anybody ever try the Valor Champion blade? According to the manufacturer, this blade has the most control of any table tennis blade made today. This is a pretty bold promise, but are we expected to pay $81.95 for a blade completely devoid of specifications? All that is disclosed is that the blade is ~ 85gr. But what are the characteristics? Is it fast or slow? Is it hard or soft? Is it thick or thin? Is it stiff or flexible? Is it regular size or oversize? How many plies is it? What wood is it? Is it springy or dampening? Any choices of handle? What type of playing style is this blade designed for?

Personally, I kinda want to know this type of information before even considering coughing up $81.95.

MORE ANTI!

For weeks nothing, now a landslide of new video. This is Dieter Lippelt against Hans Johansson at the recent world veteran championships. Lippelt (in the black) plays with short pips and Yasaka Anti Power.

Huge day today with a record NINE blog entries. Be sure to read 'em all!

STILL PLAYING, STILL GREAT

Inverted blocker supremo from the 80s Desmond Douglas, recorded today! :rock:

Would have loved to have seen this whole match (seems he only plays in shopping malls these days.)

He carries out a few "coaching courses". Came to our league to do a 2 day junior course and 1 day senior course a couple of years ago. Nice guy, very good player still and down to earth.

That's just silly making such a claim, since the term 'control' is not even officially defined anywhere!

A bit harsh to describe Des as a blocker, although he certainly liked to hold the table and was a fine blocker when required. But he was a very active attacker.

Douglas describes himself as a blocker in his own book, so I wouldn't call it harsh or inaccurate. Of course, he had other shots but he is best known for his blocking.

I've been a little preoccupied recently (one good thing about pro TT is that you have time!!) and haven't been very active. I saw you were following the Challenger Series. I was really happy with my 3rd place and especially the match against Keinath. I felt I played better and better against the choppers during the tournament - I was woeful to start with and was playing well by the end. 7-3 in the 5th against Chtchinnine in the semi stings..

I'm writing a blog inthe lead-up and during the Olympics as is Robert Frank who is in the Aussie team. The video diaries were just taking too long to do (hours each episode). If you are interested it is at: http://www.ttedge.com/news
