nice videos, Cobalt, and well played....

I think it would be good if you practiced medium pace, spinny forehand loops against someone like Rob - aiming to hit 10 in a row to his backhand, then 10 in a row to his forehand. You are sometimes off balance, and having to hit 10 in a row will force you to shuffle into position correctly, and not overplay the shot and have to block the return. Then, practicing opening with a spinny backhand (not trying to win the point outright), and following up with the forehand, with the focus on getting into position, getting a bit lower, and then spinning.

You had lots of opportunities where you opened with great serves, but weren't consistent - some minor tweaks, and that 1550 player would have been in serious trouble!

Thanks PRW, my thoughts exactly Re 10 in a row.

Had a good win last night against the current no3, I'm number 4. Unfortunately I lost to someone down the order. Damage ended up minimal however it was good enough to secure my spot in the country carnival A team so really happy.

In light of various comments on my tournament videos, I'm looking at perhaps taking my equipment down a level and then practice to get some consistency with my loops. Have purchased a sheet of Regalis Red and will put that on the Appelgren and use that for a while. Maybe slightly slower than current but won't hurt.

Not sure yet whether to keep the Yasaka Original Extra XHD on backhand or swap my Vega Europe that I've been using of late. Don't like changing pre cut rubbers unless I have to.

Following on from last weekend, we had an interclub tournament on the weekend. I played in the Veterans section which we won quite convincingly.

We had a strong team with 4 out of our 5 best players playing (our No1 is not eligible).

Its the first time in about 17 years that our club has won any kind of interclub silverware or shield. Its been quite a drought. So very happy, its a long time coming.

On an unrelated matter, I'm hoping that a sheet of Regalis Red arrives in the mail today and I can give that a go, ready to take on the number 2 on Wednesday (Rob from the videos). Should really give a bit more time to get used to but who can wait..... :P

Today was my first training with doing mulitple loops. Rob was the blocker. Also was my first hit with the Regalis Red.
Heres the 4 things we tried. Note the total practice time was only 8 minutes but at least made a start.
1) Worked on trying to hit multiple shots.
2) Then tried to spin more.
3) First shot against backspin, then topspin
4) Hit first shot steady then second harder.

All up I was fairly happy with how it went. Obviously need to get a lot more on in a row but if I could already do it then I wouldn't be practising. One thing I'm not sure if I need to do is get my hips and shoulders rotating more on impact??

Too much movement for your blocker. His blade needs to be just in 1 spot and making microadjustments.
Bahh what do I know. I'm just a jackass...

very good, Cobalt - didn't realise you could be that consistent! Good signs for the future!

One minor thing - when you move left you are balanced, when you move right you lean and are a bit too upright. Get your right leg to move out more when you are moving right.

Although the video doesn't show it well, I tend to drag my right foot when moving to the left. Then I think when it's time to move to the right my foot is a bit stuck.

I'm wondering if I'm swinging in the wrong shape 'L'. My swing could be more forward and I should be returning to square and the ready position quicker. My second and subsequent swings after from my head.

Last night I videoed my first actual club match. Was against Rob. I've videoed heaps with Rob but this was the real deal with real nerves, pressures etc.

After the match I was quite happy as felt I didn't play that bad despite the result. Was happy with doing multiple loops a few times however in looking at the video I made far too many errors and missed many chances to attack. Hit a few backhands but several bad, flat ones. Add that to looping backspin up on my toes and there's lots to work on........which is a good thing. Comments welcome.

I agree cobalt, that looks a LOT better. You're attacking a lot more balls that should be attacked. Yes you miss quite a few, especially backhand, but you also won a lot of points because of it. Rob is quite a good blocker, which tests you consistancy, which makes this a really good test.
If you continue doing this in competition, you're definitely going to break through to the next level mate.

Did the same type of practice today, trying to get 10 forehand loops in a row. One thing I was trying to do was rotate my body back to square more rather than leave myself partly side on. I'm happy with how I went and felt I got a little more power for no more effort. Also did backhand for a while and that was actually quite consistent, concentrating in keeping the bat turning over. Next did some 3rd ball then finished off with a match with Rob. Lost 3-2 but battery ran out after first game.

Decided I would be quite aggressive on my backhand and despite bad camera angle, I think I hit them pretty well.

good practice session, Cobalt - very consistent! Looking at your match with Rob - can you try hit the ball a bit earlier, before it gets to the peak of the bounce - both backhand and forehand? Hitting when it has started to drop is far more difficult. You may need to close the bat a bit more, and spin more forward than up.

Here's some practice I did today. Missing too many shots off topspin and especially when trying to pivot though I'm not sure if what I'm actually doing counts as a pivot.

The first set up until 2:36 gets pretty ugly at the end. The next set I try and rotate my body more, keep weight forward and try swing more controlled. This seems to have helped and actually felt a lot better.
