Leatherback, How did your local rating change upon your return? Did you notice that your progress had outpaced that of your usual opponents?

another interesting point....

every penhold player is a pips out smasher with an RPB.
Not one penholder plays with inverted....everyone of these guys looks the same....super skinny and lanky. they all use the same equipment....TSP super spin pips 21 sponge....and tenergy on penhold Timo Boll ALC's, the speed the generate it pure scary.

leatherback,

First off, great thread. This one is fun to read through.

Sorry if you've already addressed this but do you know why they all tend to play the short pips, smashing style? Do you think it was just this particular school? Or do you think this is common place and there's something to be said with this approach.

I currently play jpen and have only tried tacky inverted rubbers. What comes naturally to me is driving more so than looping (although I can but it's harder ex: looping backspin) and I'm just wondering if this short pips smashing/driving game would suit me better. I must admit the thought of not having my topsheet being so effected by incoming spin does sound interesting.

Any light you can shed would be great. Thanks.

i believe it was this particular team, and if this style was an advantage you would see much more of it at the top level where only 2 male players (Wang from Poland and He Zhi Wen from spain) play this style in the top 50....

traditionally, Jpen players play with fast japanese looping rubber and prefer to launch massive forehands from away from the table. The softer the rubber (japan vs. china) tend to suit a more driving stroke.....try a softer japanese rubber out!

every person i used to play regularly and be about the same level as me is now far beneath, however, I believe this would have happened with the training regiment that I would have regardless of my trip to china....

China just jump started it.....

My coach is trying to pull some strings and get me to go for another training session in china at a higher level team...

more on this as i learn more :)

nice story!
it seems a common thing for western players to go thinking they are gonna play awesome players and get the coaching of their lives.
later when they come back they say that they ended up playing with low level players and coaches didn't pay any attention to them.
I think this is natural if their mindset (of the chinese coaches/players) is completely and exclusively competition and winning, rather than the western view of a hobby where you go to have a good time.
don't get me wrong, in the western world there are many players who take it very seriously but they have their own training groups in national teams and all that.
maybe next time you should try the schlager academy or other european high level club.

players not wanting to play after training is part of the same thing.
say you are an accountant, would you stay after hour to do some more numbers and calculations?

Hey Leatherback, how's the Joo blade? Have you started to love it more than Def II? :)

defence II is way better for chopping for me....hands down....

I totally agree. Attacking with Joo is sooo great. Tremendous power hidden in that blade :) .

I can second that: it's great with Chinese rubbers. I'm currently playing with the doc's Domination, a hybrid between Euro and Chinese rubber (sticky topsheet). It plays great.

Defense is super stable IMO, but I'm used to the blade (playing with it for more than five years).

im not saying the defence is not stable because it definitely is, just for me the defence II, has a better feel for pure chopping, especially on the backhand...

I can still defend just as effectively with the joo.

I understood what you meant: just gave you my opinion about the Joo blade. :)

Feel is something subjective, so the Joo blade will feel better for pure chopping than the defence after a while. For example (concerning rubbers), I've used Tenergy64 for two years. I had terrific feeling in those rubbers, especially in the 1.7 version. Now, when I play with the 1.7 version, it feels like a springy brick. All that kind of rubbers for that matter... I've tried the Baracuda recently. Same feeling as the Tenergy64: a springy brick.
