Great video Leatherback! I'd love to see a video of an actual match so we can have a look at your transition from long to short play and vice versa and from defence to offense.

Also loved the little interactions between your coach and the girl, they seem quite a funny duo. :D

I had a chance to view the video and of course I had to watch it a few times because I enjoy watching defender's do there "THING". You said that you did well in
your one tourney and that alot of players just did not hit like the players do in China. Your game has improved alot and it seems your knowledge of LP has really shot up as well as your speed and foot work. I also noticed on how you take your BH chop more under than verticle as Haggisv said. But I also noticed you tend to get lower in the strike zone almost like eyeballing your contact point. Your Bh hits are really good and found a mistake I was making while watching your video. I was coming over the top too much on my LP and will try a more forward motion when I play tonight. Thanks again for the posting and would love to see more. I will have to look up some of your older post and compare. finally will you be going to the US Open in Grandrapids this year. If so I plan to be there.

Peace GIG......videos coming soon

i find the best way to provide variation with an OX chop is to change the timing and trajectory because adjusting the spin to a large extent is practically impossible....

during the last lesson with sun I had a few hits with his racket.....

he has been playing the same sheet of ck531a for 3 years now....ever since coming to canada, and i guarantee he plays those pips harder then 99.9% of players.....the friction is still the same as day 1....

so those people that use the excuse of frictionless pips just "becoming frictionless because they are old" doesn't hold much water after looking at his racket....

he also has never broken a pip, however, after inspection of his racket I did notice a large number of them being torn at the base...

i mentioned this too him and he said that when the pips are torn, they actually provide more backspin in his chop......

interesting...

he says he only switches when they fall completely off...

I guess that is possible if a rubber is scrupulously cleaned and maintained, however any rubber (pips or otherwise) will lose friction if you simply let it go. That's my experience, at least.

i have played players who have had actually no knowledge that they were playing with a frictionless sheet, but sun doesnt clean or really do anything to take care of his racket, in fact its the most busted up thing i have ever seen...and it still has as much friction as my 2 month old palio....

Leatherback, since you have changed from one extreme to the other (concerning long pips) it would be very interesting to hear what you have to say about this. Did your excperiencec in China help you anything with the change of setup? Will it make you play with different strategy (back away from the table earlier, perhaps)? Any more films?

Yes I'd really like to hear about how you're doing, now that you're back home as well.

oh yes the recent equipment change.....

what coach says i do!

he wants me to play more of a chopping game because as i move up in level, blocking simply is not viable multiple times in a rally,

however, I think my game has remined the same, but instead of chop blocking it has evolved into more agressive hitting very similar to a short pips style game...

my strategy has always been....chop untill you get a chance to attack, and KEEP attacking....this has not changed with the equipment.

dont get me wrong i still chop block and drop it short especially off of a serve, and when playing lower level players, it is actually easier to control the depth of a chop block with a little bit of sponge....

I have a sneaking suspicion that my coach wants to switch me back to short pips but as of right now is training me on long with thick sponge to get a betrer feeling

for interests sake we talked alot about different thicknesses and different pips....he mentioned practicing with joo se hyuk several years ago, joo indeed does use 1.7 p1r, but this is not to get more spin on his chop or to manipulate spin more, it is so that his push can have spin. He actually said 1.0-1.3 is the perfect mix of adding your own spin and continuing your opponents, any more and you are reducing the amount of backspin on your chop, but in joo's case its not just about the chop, its about the push and changing the spin on the push. Since i twiddle to push, this is not much of an issue for me so he suggested i go back to 1.3, but i will see what happens.

i train 2 hours a day 5 days a week one on one with a coach and my training regement goes something like this

10 min to get 3 sets of 30 on the table in a row backhand chop,
10 min to get 3 sets of 30 on the table in a row forehand chop
10 min to get 3 sets of 30 on the table in a row combination backhand chop forehand chop short push
10 min to get 4 sets of 25 on the table in a row forehand loop three different positions (backhand side forehand side middle repeat)

20 min training countering heavy topspin

1 hour multiball

15 min chop anywhere no rest
15 min short push on the forehand long underspin anywhere and loop
15 min pip training, hitting blocking short and long random
15 min looping against heavy chop from the coach

Thanks for the update! Try P-4 if you have the opportunity. It is much easier to generate back spin over the table against dead balls or back spin balls with this rubber, even if you use it in 1.0 mm (I haven't tried the thicker version). Since the sponge is softer and slower and the pips are a little grippier you can really dig the ball into the pips with it.

You practice a lot! What are your goals? National team? It would be very nice if you could film a few more sessions and perhaps a few matches. I am very curious about how your game looks like with P1-r.

Keep us posted on your progress!
