I thought I'd start off with probably my favourite match of all time between two of my favourite players :) Every time I watch Timo, I'm amazed at how he can get his full backhand stroke in so often, in such a fast-paced match :^) :?: Any ideas? :D :D

For anyone who hasn't seen, here's Ma Long vs. Zhang Jike in the Asian Championships earlier this year:

(I hope I've embedded this correctly!)

Personally, I think the only reason why Zhang is the only person in the world who is able to challenge Ma Long at the moment, is because of Ma's timidness to use his (very dominant) forehand on the backhand side - something Zhang does throughout. I think this may be beacause Jike has a very good block - when he uses it - which allows him to out manouvere Ma on some occasions, which I think Ma is afraid of. Although Zhang also has a very good backhand, often creating a lot of spin, Ma Long is able to go toe to toe with him in the backhand rallies, and is content to do so. As the game progresses, and especially if Ma is leading, he becomes more confident in moving round to play his FH on the BH side - clearly visible in the video above. When he begins to use his FH more, he starts to dominate the rallies.

Agree? Disagree? :D :D :D

Another example of the above - Zhang uses his FH to far greater effect, and is not afraid to run round his BH, and, even though it is close, he wins.

Why I hate watching Ding Ning against other left handers!! Hehe

Every rally is the same - BH to BH lol.

This is also why I love watching her against RH players - the variety that she brings to the game because she's LHed is awesome for spectators. It helps to take away the predictability in the women's game  :D

Comments on Ding Ning??

Although I find the speed of thr ralleys quite incredible, the matches are a little boring to watch as they don't have much variety to their game.

Yes, exactly what I think - the men's games are often far more exciting with more spin and speed variation. Although, when I went to watch the English Open last year, the women's matches were a lot more enjoyable just because of how tight they were - most of the men's being won in 4 or 5 sets :^)

I'm not sure if it matters if they're man or women, but I enjoy watching 2 players with different styles much more, the best being an attacker against a defender.

Yes, but often it is the men's games that provide more variety :) But I certainly agree that matches between choppers and topspinners are the most exciting! :D :D

LIEBHERR 2012 WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

As the Team Championships are just on the horizon now, it would be good to keep a close eye on them - I'm sure they'll be some great table tennis going on throughout the week (March 25th - April 1st).

As an Englishman, I'll be proudly supporting my nation, who, in the men's event, are top seeds in their group, (along with Australia, for all of you Aussies out there!), and the women who are second seeds in their group behind Italy, although very capable of beating them. As far as I know, there won't be any live streaming, but correct me if I'm wrong!

As for the Champiopship Division - the highest league - China, Germany, Korea and Japan are seeds 1-4, and all seem to have an easy passage through the group stages.

I'll be waiting with great anticipation and shall update you all on results and fixtures when I can! :D :)

Well, I think I completely forgot that this thread ever existed

So, I will try and begin from where I left off, although posting may be a little stuttured because of studies :headbang:

To (re)start with, a look at the up and coming German player, Patrick Franziska, who recently won the U21's ITTF World Tour Grand Finals championship, beating some accomplished players along the way. In the semi, he beat the exciting young defender from Japan called Yuto Muramatsu in four, before defeating the talented Noshad Alamiyan from Iran in the final.

Hopefully Franziska can carry this form through to the men's events now, having already proven his worth in a few Pro Tour events, especially when playing Joo Se Hyuk in the Qatar Open earlier this year, taking the Korean to the sixth game. Here are his matches against both Joo and Muramatsu:

Vs. Joo Se Hyuk Qatar Open Feb 2012

Vs. Muramatsu World Tour Grand Finals Dec 2012

Let's hear your thoughts :) :D

Gin :D

2012 WORLD TOUR GRAND FINALS PRIZES

The prizes for this year's ITTF World Tour Grand Finals were just incredible - the total prize fund being over $1,000,000, not to mention the extra incentive of a car for both the winner and runner-up!

Winners of the men's and women's singles finals (Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen) walked away with $104,000 each, as well as a GAC Trumpchi GS5 car, while the runners-up in these events received $52,000 and GAC Gonow GX5 vehicle. The introduction of these prizes for medalists just adds to the value and prestigiousness of this amazing event.

So, with the (hopefully) continued sponsorship from the Guangzhou Automobile Company (GAC), this tournament can keep growing and keep attracting the world's best players, providing us with an awesome table tennis spectacle.

What do you guys think to this? Good/bad for the game? Is it getting a bit out of hand?

Cheers,

Gin :D
