Tarlack means Eliminated, like you got eliminated from the comp after losing a match. After a bad spell of getting the boot from my last 3 comps, I have taken the name Mr. Eliminated for one month until I can go further in tourneys. I have stayed up all night to listen to the Champions League final with Bayern and my comp starts in a couple hours. Looks like I will continue the trend. :)

Got eliminated by a very under-rated 20 yr vet who I had to spot 2 points after I advanced as No 1 seed from my group. I have solidified my Tarlack position and am on the verge of having it be a houshold term in DeHaggis-land.

Well so much for blogging during the season... I started this blog at the start of my season, and will now continue now that I've finished

I've definitely had my best season yet, which is great! After several years in State league, it's the first time I feel I've really made some progress... I feel I've broken through the plateau that seemed indestructable, or at least cracked it

So what did I do to achieve this... well a few things really, and perhaps it's a combination of them that did the trick... not sure.

1. For several years I've been (casually) practicing to play with the LPs close to the table... returning serves off the bounce was the main thing, but also blocking and attacking backspin balls. However I rarely used it in competition, and although I tried at times, losing a few cheap points put me back into my old safe way. This season was differtent, as I persisted returning serves early, and since this gave me the practice to use it against higher level players, it started to pay off about half way through the season.

2. Footwork and ready position - this was always a major issue for me, although it's still poor there has been significant improvement.I used to favour receiving on forehand, but now I favour backhand, so my srating postion is quite different. I've been focussing on maving my feet and particularly returning to the ready position... when I remember it really pays off.

3. Serves - this has always been my strong point, but in some ways it's held me back as well. Against players around my level and lower, my serves always used to win me numerous points, either directly or via 3rd ball attack. Trouble is that against better players I didn't get this advantage, and since I didn't get to practice against these players often, it usually took me too long to realise it wasn't working.
Now I tend to use simpler serves most of the time, that are hard to attack and tend to set me up better for a 3rd or 5th ball attack. It does not always works as well against players of similar level, but it sure pays off against better players.

Although this season I've still had my up and downs for various reasons, I've ended up with about 65%, which includes quite a wins against the #1 players... a definite improvement, and it gives me the confidence to know that I can still go further!

I hear ya on the double-edge of good serving. I do a similar thing and you build a reliance upon it which tends to hold other areas of your game back. So when you either meet someone who has no trouble with your serve, or a regular "whipping boy" gets wise to it...it can mean you have to employ other weapons...and if you haven't developed them...good night! |-)

Congratulations. And good analysis which allows yet more improvement.

Well done haggis, you definitely had a good season this year.

I am still disappointed that I didn't get to play you in the last round though :P

Since my last week certainly wasn't my best week, I can't say I'm too disappointed, :o

You've improved a lot this year, so I'll have to watch out for you next year ;)

Not really an update on my game, but something very different I thought I'd share...

The South Australian Table Tennis Association's AGM is coming up, with several positions up for election. The one that caught my eye was the Marketing Director, which has been vacant for many years. I've talked to the SATTA officials a few times in recent times, and have shared some of my ideas about how to promote TT in SA, particuarly online. Although the people I talked to really liked the ideas, I never got any feedback and nothing ever came from it... A little annoying considering how much time and effort I put into, so I thought it at least deserves a response. :(
So I've decided that instead of complaining about it, I'd nominate myself for the Marketing Director position... something our club was happy to support (one of the things I've love about my club!). This might give me the opportunity to discuss my ideas and get some feedback, and hopefully put something worthwhile into action.

I've never done anything like this, nor do I know what to expect, but I thought I'd give it go! Wish me luck :( :( :(
