WVC2018 Diary, Day 2.

First things first: had a 1:2 record and finished 3rd in the RR group. So, no main bracket, but consolation one instead.

Showed up around 8 am and warmed up with club mates at the table where another friend (~1900) was going to play. He was in 55+ group and got himself a Slovenian, German and Chinese (who's living in the US though), and all of them were around 2100+. So. my buddy ended up with 0:3 record, and he's a better player than me,

My group was MUCH easier - by my estimate we had ~1200 (#1 seed from AU), ~1800(me at #4), ~1900 (#3 from Germany), and ~2100 (#2 from Brazil), so luck of the draw was definitely there for me.

I won easily my match against #1 3:0, put up a decent fight against #2 (still 0:3), and then lost 1:3 against #3, the match I probably could've won if I handled his no spin serves to my BH better and was less 'gung ho' when attacking. Still, not bad.

Things I saw:

* Plenty of illegal serves, mostly 'no toss' ones, and predominantly from Europeans, it seems.
* People cheering for underdogs, i.e. folks who ended up playing someone like Persson.
* Lots of 65+ and 75+ players who would kick my behind.
* Quite a few pips, but not a lot of choppers.

Doubles tomorrow - draws were posted just few minutes away. We got pairs from Slovenia, Sweden and Russia in our RR group. Should be fun :).

I Think you're in the same age group was Warren - Let me know if you meet or play him (Australian guy - Resembles a Koala too)! He's another Re-Impact LP OX user so would be stoked to meet you I reckon.

WVC2018 Diary, Day 3.

Doubles were scheduled to start at 16:30, so plenty of idle time early in the day. Went to check out Chen Weixing and Jorg Rosskopf at 45+ division in the morning:

As far as I could tell, no one in Chen Weixing's group actually showed up, so he was just hanging out there, taking occasional picture with fans.

Rosskopf had full group and did his scorekeeping duties:

He was obviously not challenged much, but let his opponents to play a bit too.

A friend pointed out to me that Zoran Kalinic played on the next table: tall lefty penholder, really nice strokes

Spent most of the rest of afternoon wandering around and watching friends playing. When our doubles started, one of the teams (Russian) was incomplete, so organizers moved player who showed up to another group, where they had a 'no-show' as well. So, we were left with only 3 teams in our group.

We had a decently close match against Slovenia/Slovakia pair (1:3), but were overmatched by Swedes (0:3).

Tomorrow is a day off, but probably will still make it back to the hall, since both Rosskopf and Chen Weixing are giving seminars: Rosskopf on serving, and Weixing on LP play.

Looks like a super fun event.

If you get anywhere close to Chen Weixing... please steal his paddle, or at least ask to look at it. This way we would put to rest all speculations on what he uses

I'll see if I can ask him at his seminar this afternoon.

I saw quite a few Australians in the hall, including the one who may have looked a bit like Koala, but that was not Warren :). Few of them were wearing shirts with ttEdge logo on the front, I guess they were sponsored by Brett? I'll keep looking.

Wore my OOAK shirt a couple of times - did not get many 'bites', only one US dude stopped me and said his friend is a moderator here ('Tat' ?).

Consolation rounds have been posted - I've got a former Iranian national team coach, who now lives in LA, so that will be a challenge. Unless - heard it through the grapevine that he was not going to play consolation, so I might get a bye then.

After some back and forth (another guy from the audience kept pressing for the answer :) ) CWX said that he uses Joola CWX Extraordinary Long pips in 1 mm sponge (pink one, labeled 50deg ). They had them on sale in Joola booth for ~50$.

WVC2018 Diary, Day 4 (rest day).

Made it to the hall around 11 am - it was quite empty. Not surprising, since it was a day off and folks were exploring what Las Vegas has to offer - overheard quite a few were planning to go to Grand Canyon/Hoover Dam. Ran into the owner of TableTennisDaily forum:

Hit for a bit with my club mates, then a couple of volunteers from Seattle challenged us to a doubles match (we lost in 5, after being up 2:0):

Caught a few minutes of Q&A with Rosskopf and CWX, but skipped photo sessions. Was going to attend CWX's seminar on LP play, but our aforementioned doubles match went 5 games, so I missed it ( I think it was advertised as 45-min session, but was done quickly in 15 min at most.

SE singles consolation bracket is tomorrow - have no desire to venture outside, where it's 106F/41C right this moment. so happy to stay in hotel room and watch World Cup match replays.
