Having never actually tried J-pen, I can't comment on throw angles there. But - every time I try to twiddle from LP to inverted on BH I am amazed how different it is now - all my blocks/hits/loops/pushes on BH suddenly go long. Same if I try to do anything with LP on my FH - automatic lost point. :@

Everything starts out this way. But over time, even 5 mins a day can change the brain and make it respond. I am sure though that you are experienced enough with the training process to figure it out.

I'm sure brain can adjust. What I find, however, is that for now I am consciously staying away from twiddling (except when serving backhand). Instead, I find that I am beginning to hit more with LP to take care of loose balls on BH close to the table - success rate is steadily creeping up there.

P.S. I'm not really that well versed in training process - that is I do almost no dedicated drills, practice sessions etc. Instead I seem to learn by osmosis, trying things here and there (club matches, just hitting around...) - and eventually some of new things stick and gradually improve. Probably not the most efficient way and likely does not lead to perfect form either.

You can honestly be saying this while posting video of working with Amy Wang. But in any case I get the gist of what you are saying. In the end, the main problem with your approach is whether winning matches or points interferes with experimentation. When it doesn't I do what you did/do.

I understand that limitation - what helps here is that in most of my weekly Tuesday league matches I am playing up (lower end players thinned up significantly lately...), while on the weekends I am mostly playing down, so can experiment more. These are purely club games or just hitting sessions, so losing points or even a match is fine.

But even in competitive match sometimes you hit a shot and go "hmm, I did not know I could do THAT" - e.g. yesterday I managed a very aggressive push to receive serve with LP which almost felt like a hit: fast, low, deep and into the elbow. We both went "Woah!'. Ended up beating that guy for the first time too .

Japsican, I noticed your post on the Chtchenine blade analog thread and I remember your posts about the difficulty of playing offense with soft 1.3mm sponge. But did you notice this post by Kees saying that (according to Lars Borg of Japsko.com), Wu Yang has a thick 35d sponge under her Skyline? Sorry to gossip behind Telnoy's back and all, but you could make a principled compromise anywhere between 1.3 and 2.2 with full confidence; while it's a stretch from Chtchenine to Wu Yang you can imagine a continuum, and it is not as far as from Gao Jun to Ma Lin. :-)

Edit: The post is from 2011 but the point is the same.

Wow, so very strange you posted what is above. It's like you're in my head Zhao.

Not the part about a thicker version of the TSP chop, but I think you are seeing where my predilection is as a player and what style I favor (Hence the clever statement about speaking behind Telnoy's back). I have played with P-1R 1.0mm and the defplay for going on a 2 years now, and despite all of the EJing, this is the setup I've done the best with, and have had the most success with. I've invested the most time with it, and understand it better than other equipment combo. But more importantly, the P-1R and playing a classic defense style has always been my best and go-to style. And it's no coincidence that Chtchetinine is my favorite player.

I have a lined up a coach (Der_Echte knows him) that is from England, who was a chopper (no longer) and is over 2300 even after switching styles. Played with several choppers including Thomas Benborn (Mr. Classic D himself with x2 P-1R) the #1 men's euro champ, and #2 women's European (Any ideas? I didn't ask. Pavlovich?). At my level, he really likes my game playing classic D, which is nice because it's so hard to find coaches that are willing (and able) to coach defense. Wang Qing Liang was great, but he plays modern d and is soooo far away and expensive.

I have enjoyed the double inverted experiment, and will play it whenever I run into LP whiners, or just for fun. I've also improved my attacking and serve return as a result of that experiment. However, I am more motivated, especially after my latest Capital Area League results where I've played out of my mind with this style and set up, than ever to figure out the classic D puzzle. Perhaps it's time to retire the Telnoy blog and create the "Being Chtchenine" blog.

I'm getting back to the double inverted defense player you mentioned at pag 2: Satoshi Aida. I just found him on the internet. Are you sure he played double inverted? If i had to guess i would have guessed a armstrong attack new anti spin.
