I just watched a youtube of Schlager versus Wang Hao in 2006.
There were a number of comments left referring to Schlager's habit of looking down at the racquet when he made a mistake.

The comment was that a newb blames the racquet.

Now, I don't think Schlager qualifies as a 'newb' but I do know that I often look at my racquet when I make a mistake.

It's not really that I blame the racquet. It's kind of a dejected, disgusted automatic reaction.

Just wondering...do other people also do the same? Or do you have other habits when you make a mistake?

And do you think it really suggests a newb-like unwillingness to blame oneself?

I've been really enjoying watching players who don't understand long pips looking down at their racquets when their shots go into the net

When I do something wrong, I tell myself off. Sometimes I might even let out a sort of a full-throated roaring growl. No-ones complained yet, but I suspect I might have to temper this one a bit :ncool:

i do the same, last week in the doubles i was putting chops into the net, the guy came over to me and said "dont worry there hard to get over", my responce was basicly "i know but im playing the wrong frigging shot to them", shouting at myself is regular part of my game lol

cant wait to use long pips in a week or so

In a particularly dusty room, sometimes it is the case that I get no grip when going for a topspin shot, and that feeling transmitted to my hand makes me look down to see the dust all over the topsheet.

Sometimes if you have been playing for a long time in a fairly humid room, your rubbers 'sweat' and they are damp to the touch - this also causes me to look at my bat after missing a shot, because I can feel in the feedback from the shot that something was wrong with the contact.

And, of course, sometimes I just look to see where abouts I have contacted the ball because, again, the feedback was all wrong.

This often leaves me checking the ball too, as hitting a crack gives a similar sensation.

I only look at it if I know that the feeling given wasn't how I expect it to be. Otherwise I berate myself with some choice words that are understood in most languages.

I barely every look down to my racket unless I really suspect there is something wrong with it (like if I might just have hit the table or something).
However I do talk to myself during matches.. quitte embarrasing if people think you're talking to them really hehe.
