Well, this topic is about using a shoestring as side tape. (NO WAY!?!?!?!?!!? WHERE'D HE GET THAT???????)  anyway, while I was at the club last week, I was sitting by this guy who comes regularly, when he pulled out his wd40 and sprayed some on the rubber. I made a couple joking comments, and he said, "well, it works!" then he goes on. "you know what this is?" he points to the side tape on his paddle, and it looks all felty. I inquire and learn it was a shoelace! Just an idea for the TRUE cheapskates out there. might do it myself. he just glued it on with Elmer's all-purpose.

The shoestring is not a bad idea actually, especially one of those wider ones that would be great for protecting a thick balsa blade!

I think I shall try it soon....now, just to find one that is 9mm wide for my one-ply hinoki...maybe the ones made for MY shoes. (I wear size 15 US/49 1/2 euro/14 1/2 AUS)

the shoelace thing sound interesting, but dosn't the WD40 cheating thing get transfered onto the ball, table hands ,and other persons gear, I might want to use tigerbalm and rub it on his eyes becuase "hay to works" lol

Brilliant idea! But I would get a round shoelace and put two lengths of it around the blade next to each other. There'd be more spring and cushioning in a round lace than a flat one and 2 next to each other would provide a cushion from all angles. That is such a great idea and the only flaw I can see in it is that lace may leave "hairy" bits behind when you want to remove it. But coating it in some polyeurethane first should prevent that. Of course it might look ugly, but so does a broken or dented blade!
