Well my 982 took a rather painful, high speed trip to a wall when I was practicing today. I did a really big mid distance drive and the blade slipped out of my fingers, sending it sailing at the brick wall on the opposite side of the table. However, the blade didn't snap in half as I was afraid it might.

No, in fact all that broke was the cork piece on the back of the handle that popped off, from when it hit the ground after bouncing off the wall. I managed to glue that back on quite easily with a bit of wood glue. However, the head of the blade now has a pretty huge dent in it, roughly 4cm by .4 cm, and .1 cm deep.

It doesn't seem to affect the feel of it at all (though it caused a slight deformity in wood grain around the spot, from the compression of it. Not bad at all considering that this blade has been banged many times on the edge of the table and all that. I expect I'll be able to keep using it as my regular blade at least until I order a new one, and it'll be handy to keep around for testing out stuff.

Here are some pics of the damage:

It's ruined.
Now you should buy the most expensive 1-ply kiso hinoki blade you can find :P

Hey, I'm the one buying your damaged blades offa you. Don't convince me that dented means useless. :P

And I'm not the biggest fan of hinoki anyways. It's nice, yes, but I really prefer juniper with a soft rubber for my style of play.

methinks Hobbes is looking for an excuse to purchase a new blade...I think that with edge tape and rubbers it would be very hard to see...and you shouldn't be hitting the ball on that area anyway, even tho I do...lol......but if you want to get a new blade, you have my permission...lol

The grains of juniper and hinoki are fairly similar, but you can tell the difference with a clearer view of it, top down. Juniper's grain is much tighter and the lines are thinner, and the surface is totally opaque. Hinoki has thicker lines that're less dense, even on very good quality cuts, and the surface has a weird semi-translucent look to it.

Sorry about your blade, but I am curious to know what did you use to fill the dent ?

Oh, I didn't fill it at all. I don't think there'd be much point anyways since while it's pretty wide, it isn't that deep into the blade and I'm not ever hitting with that part of it.

Being a master gunstock maker, I can tell you I have removed many dents in stocks by steam. Put a damp cloth over the damage and iron it. Nothing to lose. :D

Hmmmm, I'll try that the next time I take the rubber off the blade. I just superprimed my sheet and normal glued it on so I won't mess up the damaged part any more by splintering. Also, after a bit of sanding to even things out, the blade seems basically fine. I'm going to hold off on buying another for at least a while.
