I will be visiting South Korea from June 8 to June 24 and have a few questions. For the first week my family and I will be staying in the Gangnam district of Seoul, and then traveling to other parts of the country for vacation. Would anyone know if there are any table tennis clubs and table tennis stores in the Gangnam area? Also, are there any table tennis tournaments taking place in Korea during the above time period. It would be wonderful, if possible, to watch some top Korean players such as Joo Se Hyuk.

I live here in Korea and if you can make it just north of Seoul to Uijeongbu, you can do a tourney or two with my club. There are a number of regional tourneys my will do this summer.

Nexy can tell you when the pros do their thing in Seoul. I think most of the top pros will be away for the Olympics, but maybe Nexy can fill you in.

There are a ton of places to play in Seoul, way too many. Korea Table Tennis Gym is a must-see and is on the east side of the city just south of the Han river.

A visit to Nexy would be a great idea as he has a big shop, a test table and a nearby club with a really high rated div 1 player. His shop is in Bucheon, which is on ht eSE part of the city, about 1.5 miles away from Songsan station on live 1.

Be sure to get a T-Money card for hte busses and subways.

Der_Echte,

Thanks so much for your very helpful response. The tournaments sounds very exciting. However, I completely ruptured my achilles tendon 7 months ago playing table tennis. It will be still many months until I can play in a tournament. In Korea, I would most like to visit a very good table tennis club, to see what a table tennis club is like in Korea, and to play a little, albeit carefully, so as not to risk re-injuring myself.

The Korea Table Tennis Gym sounds like a great place to visit. Does it have a website? Do you happen to know the address? Since the Korea Table Tennis Gym is located south of the Han River, perhaps it isn't too far from where I will be staying. I do know roughly where the Yongsan station is located (this will be my fourth trip to Korea), so visiting Newgy sounds like a great idea too.

Thanks again.

I hear the Korea open is in May due to olympics, so you just missed out on some pro TT action.

Here is the 9Jang.com description of the club with a lot of pics. You could print it out and show to taxi driver. it is prolly 8 km or moe from where I think you will be.

You ought to take the subway to Amsa station. The club is under 1 km from there and a cab will be base fare.

The Korea Gym has a weekly club tourney or league every Sat that starts around 3 PM. Lots of really good players there. That is the best time to see good TT over there. That club is 3-4 times larger than the typical TT club. Most Korean TT clubs have 4-5 tables for play and 1-2 tables for training.

This is the 9Jang.com description of my club, LSS TTC.

You are talking about the Korea TT Gym. Yes, there is a small resturant as part of that club. You can get Kimchi, Kimbap, and Bibimbap (rice, veggies, egg, noodles) among other inexpensive healthy food that is faster than fast food itself.

I am back from a very nice trip to Korea. I would like to thank everyone that gave suggestions on table tennis clubs near Gangnam. I ended up finding an excellent table tennis club just three blocks from my hotel, and six blocks from Gangnam subway station. I don't recall the exact name of the club, but it is something like Angel Ping Pong club. The club has a website too, but I forgot to write it down haven't been able to find it. Anyway, the Angel Ping Pong club was great. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly and there were lots of excellent players to practice with. I was also impressed that so many table tennis spoke English very well. It was also interesting that there was a Korean movie star at the club. Here in the US I think that it would be very unlikely to encounter a movie star at a table tennis club.

Yes, and no...
There is the odd movie star who might hang out at a TT club. Susan Sarandon and Adoni Maropis perhaps the most prominent, but this compilation by Larry Hodges shows some other candidates.

Good luck!

After a little research, I se this is likely the website of the club our friend visited.

http://www.angelpp.co.kr/index.htm

Pics of the club
http://www.angelpp.co.kr/Zero/zboard.php?id=photo_club

It is maybe 600-700 meters south of gangnam station.

That club did not register with 9jang.com, which is a major website listing for Korean clubs with pics, so Koreans can find the clubs and go there.

Friend, is this ur club?
