Last night playing league I was playing a point when the umpire called a let. The let was called after I had played the ball which then went into the net. The umpire gave the point to my opponent and said it was not a let????? ......I am not worried about losing the point but surely if the umpire calls a let there can not be a point scored.

I think that the umpire can change their mind, as long as their call does not affect your shot (which it didn't in this case as you had already played your shot). I sometimes call a let serve as soon as I see it, but then when it does not hit the table after it hits the net, I change it into a fault.

What was the reason for the let in this case?

The original let was called as someone walked in behind my opponent to retrieve a ball. He was actually calling the let for me!

In that case, if the let was called before the point was over (ie. before your ball hit the net), then the let should stand, and the point re-played IMO.

In my opinion, the umpire can call a let, then change their call as long as the next point has commenced. Sometimes, for example if a ball comes into the court and the umpire has called a let, he will then decide that the ball was "already gone" or the player had already played the shot and the possible distraction occurred after the point was resolved. This can happen when the ball can be seen coming & the umpire is deciding at what point the let should be called. If the ball comes over from behind the umpire, his attention is not then so divided between the ball and the play.

Sometimes also the player the let was in favour of (you in this case) might tell the umpire that the distraction made no difference and that the point should be scored. In this situation I, as the umpire (and I think most people) would change the let to be a point.

In calling a let while a point is still in play, the point must now be a let. The very act of calling Let by the umpire makes the ball "dead" the moment he calls it, unless as Haggisv said its on a net serve that goes long. In the circumstances described here though, I can't see any other option but to re-play the point.

I agree with Reb, if the ball is in play and a let is called the point is over and needs to be re-played. If I was umpiring a match and this situation arose, I would likely have the players re-play the point.
