that was rather interesting to read.
and it saves the time of asking everybody what the diffrence is and getting 10 diffrent answers of which most hare faulty or only half the truth while this seems correct to me.

I always wanted to know if there was a difference and if so, what it was. Thank you.

One of my first bats was black rubber on both sides. I called it black beauty. I gave the game (tt) away for a little bit then when I came to play again my bat was illegal. Now I ask you how many of you inspect your opponents bat and see which side is the spinnest, hardest, fastest or slowest. So dose it really make a difference any more that you have to have one red and one black rubber. Don't get me wrong I know its the rule and I don't mind at all. Just thought I'd pose the question do we really need red & black. Lets have any coulours we like. Might even briten up the game

"80/20" (private joke): as two colours are now obliged, I don't think manufacturers would be interested in others colors (to expensive).
And a return to the same color on both side: too many players would protest.

well I would hate it if somebody would use 2 sides with the same color.. especially if one side is something like LP or Anti and the other is some ultra spinny stuff.

Yep that is the main reason for having the two different colours...i think it does make sense...

Since I experiment with a lot of different rubbers to review them, I have found my playing with the same colours on both sides a few times without realising it. I got o my garage, get a rubber I want to try and just stick on on one of my blades without looking

Funny thing is that most of the time my opponents don't notice either

I've done the same, and sometimes when i'm coaching I deliberately use LP Black and Reverse Black (or Red) to emphasise to the class the importance on being able to read the spin from other means than just rubber colour.

Yes that's it, mine was deliberate as well

Good point though...it's a good way of teaching them how important it is...

I use a penholder blade, one sheet only (I like it lightweight), and it is always red, because I really don't know how to make the other side red. Paint won't do, because it feels awkward under your vingers; ink, even if it is waterproof, will rub off when I play for a long time, and red ink will not stain the wood enough anyway; paper tears or wears very quickly. So I use black, waterproof ink (I used to use Indian ink, but changed to refill-ink for permanent markers).
Anyone's got anything that works really well? How do the Chinese do this?

Lately I saw a female member of the Hong-Kong team (forgot who) using a Chinese penholder bat with cork on front as well as back. That would solve a lot. But I have never seen one for sale.

You can get sticker sheets both in red and black, which is used to cover the other side of the bat.

Often people also put a long pimpled rubber on (without sponge), and can can even use this as a surprise shot... Another very light rubber is another option...

Sounds interesting. Do you know how these sheets feel? Are they widely used? And where should I get them?

We used to have some made by Galaxy, not sure if we still do. They are just like a big plastic sticker, and you cut it down to size just like you'd cut a rubber.

Still interesting. But plastic, I don't know, does that mean that they get slippery when wet? Or are they more like ordinary rubber? If they're not slippery I'll order some from you (if you can find them, that is), just to try them out. It's nice to know just what is and isn't possible or useful with equipment. That is the big advantage of a forum like this.
