Which table tennis balls do you think produce the best Wobble when using Long Pimples?
I know that in theory all balls should be the same weight and hardness but as we all know there are differences!.
I find slightly softer balls wobble more than hard balls.
Also Poorly made balls with irregular seams will wobble more than a well made perfect ball.
I personally find that the Standard Stiga 3* ball (not the ultima) produces the best wobble where something like a Butterfly 3* will produce the least.

Damn! Is that why I can't get wobble when my comp uses BTY 3* balls!

Double fish training balls will wobble without using LP...

As far as 3 star balls are concerned, I'm suprised you rate BTY as the most stable, we got a batch of BTY instead of our usual Tibhar three stars and eveyone hated them for their poor stability and short lifetime. If the stiga ones wobble even more, I really wouldn't be able to play a match with one.

You're right about the short life on the BTY balls Jasper. Ours are lucky if they get through a nights comp without cracking. If they do make it, they usually crack very soon after if we have a practice hit with them.

We don't use BTY balls anymore, they crack too easy. Nowadays, we use Double Happiness 3 star balls, we found that it last a lot longer even compared with Nittaku premium 3 stars. With the above 3 different balls, I don't feel there is any difference in the wobbling effect. with long pips.

With that said, I think the lighter balls will produce more wobbling effect.

Hi Tat, I totally agree with you on the DHS balls. I bought 30 of them a little while ago, and while I find they discolour quite easily, they last and last. And they have a very nice bounce. I always keep them in my bag in case the BTY ones crack or just for practicing with.

Hi ReBorn, DHS is our preferred balls now in Tat Wai Table Tennis Academy (that is, my garage).

One of my practice partners bought a gross (144) of them in orange and the other partner bought a bundle in white so we are able to play a new ball every time. Since I provide table, net, space, water and electricity, I don't need to buy balls.

Do you like orange or white balls better?

I like white better, I think, but I can play fine with orange.

Chuckle!

Besides the brand/condition of the ball, do you think wobble also has to do with what you do with the ball? LP is supposed to generate wobble, I have yet to notice it. Perhaps I don't adopt the right stroke for it?

At the college, they have one of those gumball type machines, put a quarter in and get a ball. These have to be the worst balls in the world. They even wobble if you roll one across the table! In the last 4 years, I have gone threw more than a gross of good balls for the students from my own pocket but this year, we finally got a grant for balls and other things. We got new nets first. The old ones were terrible. I could hit an inch low with a smash and the ball would fold the net and go over. LOL
There are some balls I like better but for the money, we are getting Gambler Platinums. They play pretty good. :D
