I was on another forum that had 2 videos of ma long doing backhand.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlBd0LWP6lM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kOJqB2 ... u.be&t=274

His old video had him doing a lot of hip rotation in his backhand. The new videos has him doing the forward bend that ttedge.com stresses and little hip rotation. A poster thought this change was due to a higher risk of injury from the hip rotation in the backhand. I was wondering what Brett agrees with this.?

In my opinion, the new angle is inconclusive. It is not like the older angles from the back or from the front.

Yes the camera angles are different. It does seems to me that if you focus on how far the right shoulder comes forward there is a clear difference. He still uses a bit of hip rotation in the second video though. Maybe someone has a better newer video?

I remembered that his first name was Tatsuya. I got his surname as I spelled it from the honour page of our TT association from when he won the Open Singles while he was here.

I will have to get it changed so that we are not calling him Tatsuya "naked" for all the world to see. :) :)

I tried. Unfortunately "the powers that be" want Tatsuya to complain about being "naked" to the world on our TT association web site before they will change it. Oh well.

In the first video, the coach was encouraging him to twist. To do so, he needed to take the ball from outside of his left hip. In the second video, he was just playing his natural shot with both hips going back and forward together.

Can anyone comment on the thumb movement that Ma Long makes after every backhand topspin against backspin? (Fairly obvious if the video is slo-mo'd in Settings). He seems to be "resetting" his thumb in some way after completing each shot, and it seems so deliberate that I'm assuming he must have been trained to do this.

It was nice of you to try! I'm sure if he did see it, he probably wouldn't be offended at all. He'd probably just find it amusing :)

If I was to take a stab in the dark at answering this, I'd say it's because he's relaxing his grip after every ball. As part of generating so much power on those backhands, he'd need to tighten his grip on contact, especially the thumb and index fingers. What do others think?

I think he's switching between the backhand and neutral grips. Probably it's good to make a habit out of the switch, even if you know the next shot is again going to your BH.

That sounds right. I think the difference between his backhand and forehand grips became more pronounced a few years ago and this switch is now more noticeable in videos in the last 4 years or so.

You are definitely right about his thumb reset. I'd only be guessing however I'd be surprised if he was deliberately doing it or if he was conscious of it. I could easily be wrong here.

NextLevel, there is no need to recruit others into your LTT111 campaign!

LTT114 is now available on ttEDGE.com

If you follow this thread, you should be familiar with the content by fastmover. Hopefully my explanation, along with Ilia's tournament win, will inspire you to make your own personal highlights package.

Walking before you can run seems to be a key aspect of learning TT especially as an adult, this is emphasised in the LTTS approach. Is there anything to be said for a bit of running until you can run? I.e. how much time should be spent pushing limits and how much just trying to be consistent?
