Here is a video from the Joola Teams West at Berkeley in September.

Not the nicest match to watch since his opponent, a 1600 adult, has enough power to end the ralleys.

But Jayden does show some good fight to come back from 2-6 in the 5th.

BTW, the boy sitting in the stands for the first couple seconds, who then plays on the adjacent table, is Jaydens team mate Victor the current #1 U.S. 8 year old.

OK, Nationals was this last week and I have an update on our modern defender Jayden.

In the US National boys U10 event Jayden knocked out the USATT 2013 rated #1 seed to advance to the Semi-finals. It seamed that his opponent wanted to avoid Jayden's forehand so he went after Jayden's backhand very aggressively the whole match, but Jayden was able to weather the storm winning 14-12, 11-7, 11-9.

On paper this was his best win, but I was most proud of his QF in the U1400 event. His opponent was an extremely steady and composed player who was very comfortable with his pips. After his opponent won the second game 11-3, I told Jayden he would need to move his feet and spin forehands to win. And move his feet he did, he began racing all over the court spinning forehand after forehand and won the next 2 games 12-10, 11-7.

In the semi-finals he faced his team mate Victor who is very familiar with his game. He lost 0-3, but all games went to deuce. It is really too bad that they were in the same side of the draw.

Jayden also earned 2 other bronze in U1500 and U1400.

As well as he is playing, I think he will soon be quite a lot better as there are several parts of his game that he still needs to master.

BTW, in the young boys we were pretty thrilled with our results. We brought two 9-year-olds and they both medaled. In the Minicadets (12 and under) Aziz finished #1, and he was playing some boys who were a full year older.

Not too shabby for a small club.

Here are a couple games from nationals.

Turn your speakers down if you don't like the music I added to drown out my yelling.

The first is from the U1400 Quarters:

The second is a game from Jayden's Under 10 QF match with the #1 seed:

That's quite impressive (the last video). He uses the pimples to setup the ball very well, and although he lacks some power to put the ball away at times, his forehand is looking very promising. He chops well with the pimples too!

Definitely not a 800 level player any more.. Doesn't seem to chop all that much, though, but has a strong attack. Probably because at that level opponents who can attack consistently enough to keep a chop rally going are going to be far and few between.

Ratings are out. After nationals Jayden is 1742, a gain of 438 points. Not the largest nationals point gain, but in the top 10 I think.

This puts Jayden at #9 on the US Boys 10 and under list. He should have some time to move up the list as he is not yet 10.

2019 USATT Hopes Regional Champion Jayden.

Image

So this is 4 years out of 5 that we have had a different young player win a Hopes regional tournament. Jayden missed last year with a broken finger.

2015 Tina
2016 Avery
2017 Aziz
2019 Jayden

Not bad for small club.

He's got a nice forehand flick. I don't see him as a modern defender though, but that could be the level of the competition not wanting to loop that much...I get that at my level. In the videos he looks more like a Liu Song style but more pips. I could see him turning into that.

I think he's playing really well!   He's chopping so well with backhand, and looping beautifully with forehand... no need for new equipment IMO.
