Alright, here's my situation. I haven't played much table tennis in past past 2 years, university and all and I was coaching for another 2 years before then. So I haven't practiced seriously in a pretty long time.

Fortunately, I'll have a bit more free time in 2017 and the TT bug obviously came back alongside that anticipated free time! I used to be around 2000 canadian rating player, strong attacking forehand and and I like to control the game with good backhand block. I could obviously go back to the same thing but each time I come to ooak for the past few days, you guys make me want to switch off to defense.

Do you think I should? How much do you think my rating(as in skill level, I don't care much about the actual number) would drop if I was still at the level I used to be at.

Also, I currently have a andro fibercomp def that was given by a friend a while back with no backhand rubber on it. What do you guys think about that blade for a beginning chopper and what kind of backhand rubber would you pair it with?

Thanks a lot! Looking forward to talking to you guys if you manage to convince me!

Your skill level won't drop....it's just your habits that have to change...especially if you used to like to back hand block....you are going to have to learn to have the habit to chop....no time like the present I always say....

Why not go all the way and put an LP on it to try. Something cheap and easy to start with. Chinese for sure. Pogo, Palio 351A or the like. And as LB says, get chopping! And bring in your block to a chop-block!

Just do it.

Leatherback said something in a post that Japsican has adopted as his sig. If I find it I will post it.

Definitely go for it. If you used to play at a decent level, you already have good control and and read and generate spin. The next part is learning to put together your game based on different shot selection, which will mean reprogramming footwork and habits. The FH shouldn't need to change much. On the BH is where most of the change is.

I'd second Reb's suggestion to put some LP on your BH and get stuck in. Pogo is a good selection - it's controlled and allround good at everything. Probably with a bit of sponge - say 1.0mm, but OX could be fine too.

Do you have reliable practice partners, a robot, or someone to feed you multiball? I've found that the best way to repogram your footwoork is to do drill which make up the types of transitions you do in matches - for example a chop followed by having to push or flick a short ball to your FH,

Hey thanks for all the answers guys! I've been looking for different cheap options for lp. Two that are available at my local shop are DF 1615, and ck531. I think I'll enjoy a lp that let's me vary spin when pushing st the table, so one that can somewhat grip the ball. I probably want something that is fairly slow so I can get some chopping technique going. Any of those 2 fit these criterias?

Oh also, I'll be using something around a 1mm sponge, I never liked the feel of ox pips

Not gonna matter now! But both are great! Go with 1.0mm sponge

Alright sounds good, I'll get myself one of those, probably the palio since more people seem to be using that. I'll update you when I try it! Thanks for the help!

You could buy another cheap but more grippy LP with the Palio: f.e. Globe 979 1.0 or Neptune 0.7..
Have fun!
