What's the best way to deal with the remaining spin on an incoming loop that's bounced off the top of the net? We've all had it happen, as the looper or the receiver – looped ball jumps off the net cord, bounces on table, the return goes way high.

There are some obvious confounding factors: the unexpectedness of the net ball, which throws off timing and probably creates some panic; and the effect of net contact on the initial spin, as well as its effect on the receiver's ability to read trajectory.

I must admit that spin is the least of my worries with such balls.

1. Pray
2. If it's high enough above the net when you can play the shot - hit it hard and try and over power the spin that may or may not be on the ball
3. If the ball is below the net, take it as late as possible to allow as much of the "spin" to have fallen off the ball and use very soft hands and gently lob the ball back giving yourself as much margin for error as possible

I'm not sure if I'm accurate or not, but in my observation it seems as though most of the spin remains on net shots, only the pace is drastically changes.

So if a loop hit the net it's still very spiny, but now there's no pace.
So if you just try to touch it back, the ball doesn't sink into the sponge.
It only grabs the topsheet.

It's like trying to touch block a slow spiny loop. Quite possibly, but it's easier if you add pace to your shot.

I agree with RR.
Funny, one of my strategies against offensive tensor-players is to make use of slow-loops as they are spinny but have very little pressure.

1. Get bat to the ball - either:
a) you thought the ball wasn't going over the net and suddenly it has
or
b) you anticipated it going a lot further towards you than it actually has so unless you area blocker you will be rushing forward to get to it.

2. Do whatever it takes to get the ball back, waiting as long as you can to allow the spin to slow as much as you can - either:
a) you have initially not set up for a shot and suddenly have to.
or
b) you have set up for a shot with a certain speed and spin a bit back from the table and now you have to come in and adapt to the slower ball with most of its original spin.

I always felt as a beginner, I couldn't get quickly enough to be in a good position to play anything with a net ball.

One thing for sure if it is a definite underspin ball, the spin doesn't die and the ball bounces just enough to attempt to play a "lifting" push ( "lift" the ball vertically until blade edge lines up with the top of the net ) so if Im lucky the underspin makes the ball roll on the rubber and return straight and low floaty return so I get a chance to get ready to block or play the next attack from my opponent.

Any topspin ball that catches the net is a nightmare. I ALWAYS end up opening up the bat blade, and the ball flies HIGH and LONG becos of the insane topspin still on the ball. Forget it if there is sidespin too !With enough time, I can consciously FORCE myself to close the bat angle and keep my arm solid as a rock, but even that is touch and go. Sometimes it works most of the time the topspin overpowers through and ball goes out of play. |-)

I think it was during one of the recent H2 games, the commentator said (when one of the players flubbed the return of a shot that came off the net-cord) that to return that sort of ball you "needed a loose wrist". No idea if that's true or not...
