No one does it at our club and if you did everyone would think you were a goose.

I agree with Silver and Dunc. It's contrived and silly for a westerner to scream this often. In my opinion, if you do it too much, makes you sound like a poser (sorry to those who do). When I see a westerner, particularly of European descent, Cho'ing (right or wrong) it comes off as if they're trying to be Asian...like Steven Segal sporting a Gi, tabi boots, a chonmage (Japanese Samurai Ponytail). I'm like, dude you aren't Toshiro Mifune, and this isn't pre-meiji peroid Japan.

Presumably we all play other sports. If we make a basket, score a coal, knock a person out, we do not yell "Cho."

I speak English, raised in the US, so I say "Yes" or some other inaudable noise accompanied by a fist-pump. If I DO celebrate a point, I do it sparingly, and it's reserved for only moments that deserve it. Nets/Edges/Faults...if you celebrate those you're an ass.

Over-cho'ers are not intimidating, in fact I find that if one does "Cho" vs. me it's a sign that they see me as a threat and need a mental edge or want to create one. Does it aid in breathing? Perhaps, however, ANY word or gesture can serve in this capacity: Yeah! Yes! Huah! Boom! Got it! Bah! Bang! Oooo! ...It all works. And it's all congruent with my language and culture. Don't be "that" guy.

CHO! :muscle:

That's the forum equivalent. Or it would be if I could get the text to be super huge in size. Very very frustrating / annoying.

even in matches i saw on youtube i always root for those who celebrates quietly vs the ones who cho exuberantly.

but choing often and hard do diminish opponents morale so there's that.

have u watch zjk in miracle 12 tho. them girls roaring at his name after every point seems way detrimental vs lone cho

I was wondering what that video had to do with anything, and then I realized who posted it.. Figures. Serves were quite underwhelming, illegal or not. Why bother standing like that if you're going to serve like that? No cho-ing in the first 20 seconds or so that I could see.

Of course if you insist on Choing or even if you want to make an ironic statement about it, you can always do it in more style with a Cho! T-Shirt.

Incidentally the business is run by respected English Vet and hard bat player Martin Gunn.

Actually, looking at that a second time.. it's almost like he's wiping off the table after someone sneezed on it (the big red "CHO!" in the previous post..).

I thought it was Igor bagging him out for not carrying the ball on his racquet during the serve, a non sequitur for this thread. Admittedly I only watched the first lot of serving.

As you said, I really can't stand the thought of a middle-aged white bloke saying "cho" :D I just find it properly embarrassing and cringeworthy.

"Good" is very similar - short, easy, forceful. Just, er, it's actually in our native language ;)

I don't mind my opponent saying "cho", doesn't wind me up or anything - often gives me a little giggle. I dislike seeing any player do it when an opponent has made an unforced error though. In that case, it's OK to say "come on" or "use it" or something, but you shouldn't be celebrating a genuinely unforced error IMO

I'll do it if it annoys the opponent. Usually after nets or edges. I want a Cho! shirt.
