An incident happened tonight in competition that brought about some discussion and differences of opinion.

The server served and in doing so made contact with the ball, then the table, causing them to drop their bat to the floor. The whole process made a bit of a bang as it does when you hit the table but nothing excessive. The returner returned the ball into the net.

Who wins the point, or is it a let?

It be up to the umpire to decide if the incident was classed as interfering with the game...if not, the server wins the point, otherwise it's a let.
If I was umpiring, I'd call a let, as I would expect the receiver would be distracted by the incident.

Agreed. I guess the only consideration is that the magnitued of the impact (ie. loudness, violence, table interference) might be subjective. I think there should just be a rule that any serve where the bat hits the table during the serve motion is a let; just to eliminate the variable of opinion. I do this more often then I'd care to admit as a tomahawk, punch, and backhand server.

The most impressive case of bat-meets-table I remember was many, many years ago, in a dorm basement. The best player did a squat-tomahawk serve and hit the edge at full racket speed with the edge of the bat. Put a right-angled divot in the racket maybe an inch and a half deep, if it wasn't two inches. I think he borrowed my bat for the rest of the evening, maybe for the rest of the week. Wish I had a photo. I know he reads (or did, a year ago) this forum.. maybe he remembers..
