I'm about to embark on a new hobby (3D printing) so I decided to look up stuff on Thingiverse to print. Naturally, I'd look up "table tennis". Is there anything useful I could print?

Wow ! I now wonder what we could do with LEgo ! Imagine LEgo blocks some wood glue and some carbon/composite sheets.

Also, if possible to mix wood power wood shavings iron filings and magnets ? What could we create ?

Would play completely different from the usual ball but for funzies, never break anther ball ever. :)

I've seen video of this somewhere. It's a flexible ball.

I've been learning 123D Design and now Fusion 360, so what could I design and print that would be useful? After thinking (didn't take long) I came up with - net height gauge. I already have a nice one (Champion brand), which also doubles as a net tension gauge (it's the "heavy net gauge" described in ITTF Technical Leaflet T2). So I thought I'd design something similar in plastic. Immediately ran into a problem.. 100 grams is 1/10 of a kilogram roll of filament. :lol: Printing a net gauge weighing 100 grams in ABS or PLA would result in a part maybe and inch and half thick... :lol: :lol: :lol:

Technical Leaflet T5 describes net gauges. There's quite a bit more to it that I imagined. Quoting from this:

All net gauges may have a height of about 180 mm. Their width shall be less than 48 mm (heavy
gauges) and less than 42 mm (light gauges) but slimmer is better. Their thickness shall be 2.0mm so
that they can be used for determining the extension of the racket covering up to or beyond the edges
of the blade as recommended in HMO 7.1.1. As net gauges can also be used for the detection of glossy
surfaces at an angle of about 45°, their background may be dark and letters or logos may be white.
There are no rules for advertisements on the net gauges, other than the ITTF logo shall only be
used for net gauges that have been approved by the ITTF. Along one of its edges the net gauge
shall have a ruler of 15cm scaled in mm so that it may serve for measurements as the height of the

Other features may be added but may not change a basic requirement as described in Table 1 and in
the text.

The design of a net gauge shall allow it to hang vertically on a cord. If it does not, the centre of gravity
of its plane is located outside its medium vertical axis, which may lead to incorrect measurements
because the lower part of the gauge will touch the net. For the same reason, the central split may not
be narrower than 7 mm.

On one side the net gauge shall have an incision of 4.0 mm with a tolerance of +/- 0.05mm, and on
the other side it may have an incision of 2.0mm with a tolerance of +/- 0.05mm. The angles of the
projecting part at the top of the incisions must be 90° exactly and rounding on the outside or inside
corners is strictly prohibited. The height of the lateral incisions shall not be less than 152.5 mm, so
that both long edges can be used for flatness checks. All relevant dimensions shall be properly
indicated on the gauge.


OK, so that rules out a plastic "heavy gauge" - it's got to be 2mm thick, and that's way less than a 100g hunk of plastic would be. Can I weigh it down? Sure, but I'd need to use lead - the most commonly available weight would be coins, the heaviest coin on use weighs 5.66 grams each - I'd need, what, 17 or 18 of them? :lol: A light gauge would be a lot easier to make and that's what I will do. I'll post it on Thingiverse when I'm done. It'll be nice to have two or three of these lying around.

I've no idea why Technical Leaflet T5 mentions the cushion limit rules for wheelchair play.. :lol: I thought it was because they wanted the net gauge to be used to measure the maximum thickness of the cushions, but apparently not...

It'd have to be printed in several parts, and glued together. Typical printer has a 8x8 inch or smaller printing bed.

Doesn't 3D printing and printer filament/"ink" still cost an arm and a leg? I've seen a tiny printer in a store here that would print things smaller than about 15cm x 15cm and it was like $750 without the printing material. I'd hate to print errors or have jams LOL :lol:

Not any more. $10-20 a kilogram more or less these days, more for exotic filaments​ and more in Australia, of course.. :lol:

That would be a challenge to print (as would be any hollow ball). No supports inside. I suppose if you had one of those laser sintering printers, or the ones that use a laser to cure liquid resin it would work..

We have one at work that puts down some sort of wax in lieu of interior supports, which you can later melt out.

Yeah, one of the online 3D printing services actually can "print" in gold, silver, platinum, etc. When you read the details, it turns out they're printing wax models, and using the lost wax molding process to produce the objects.

My brother in law printed me a table tennis paddle once out of PLA.

It's crazy heavy. Be a good weight training tool for someone I suppose. But more than anything, I just keep it around as it's funny to check out.

But now with the crazy amount of filaments that are available, I don't see why someone couldn't use a wood filament and print themselves a completely legal bat... Assuming you have a large enough bed.

With Cura (or other slicer software) you can specify a low infill percentage and a thin top and bottom skin if you want to reduce weight. What this gives you is a solid top and bottom face and a honeycomb-filled interior.

The "wood" filaments are simply PLA with some added finely ground wood flour. It is lighter and has an interesting texture, but I don't think it conforms to ITTF's idea of "wood".. :lol:
