Yes I heard about that... I'm not sure if I like this idea. I can see it might lead to further advances in materials, so that the technology in rubber may not be as important.

I would have thought a whole new range of rubber covering would be necessary to accomodate the new materials... :^)

Not to mention the vast market which will open up for specialised edge tape... 8)
Clearly, you can't use edge tape made for wood if your blade is purely synthetic! That would be ... like ... terminally unhip.

I have a feeling if ever they do change the rule the CNT will still stick to wood because of 'feel.'

Such blades already do exist, by the way - Stiga makes some, Double Fish as well. They're aimed at the rec crowd for now, but if the rules change then they become legal (if you replace the weird colored rubbers on them). Whether people will actually WANT them (the ones that exist now, that is) is another matter..

In terms of new materials, I'd expect to see the use of foam and honeycomb plastics in cores, and perhaps phenolic in face plies. Shouldn't be difficult to engineer something that gives even better "feel" than wood.. just give the engineers time.. maybe a year or so.. What would an ABS-Nomex Honeycomb-ABS blade feel like, for instance? Probably fairly soft.. You'd probably have to add weights in strategic locations to get it up to 80-90 grams and the balance point where it's supposed to be...

From what I heard. ITTF is reluctant to allow optional material for blade, manufacturers have similar feeling

I might be interested in a vibranium/adamantium layer. The table tennis equivalent of Captain America's shield, which has seemingly magical qualities. At least in some universes.

... Guess it is OK for HassigV to dust off the ole Schilkrot 900 and have another go... or invite a few guests to try it out. :D

Actually, if you think about it.. would you rather have a divot in the side of a blade, or a divot in the edge of a table?

That would depend on whose table it is!
