Finally got around to watching a match on satellite TV last night - it was the Xu Xin/Fan Zhendong vs. Ohshima/Morizono final doubles match. That was soooo close. I'll have to agree, the level of play is very high, didn't see many errors that weren't caused by pressure from the other side. I'll have to watch that again, some of Morizono's serve returns in particular.

Does anyone else feel like me that there are more ball-led mistakes than ever now we have the spastic ooops I mean plastic ball?

I'm referring to the matches on tv ATM, but I see it in our league tournaments all the time.

Was a time when chos were reserved for winning shots, now there are more for the mistakes made from the other end due to side kick, edge balls, balls going long, the list is endless!

Don't get me wrong, there are still great matches and players, but the commentators make frequent reference to the nasty, I mean plastic ball and how TT has changed!

Hmm... I think more of an opposite way. :) I think the new ball is easier to play, so you play with greater force and placement to get points.

- Play is more physical
- Backhand attack is more important
- Spin is less important
- Short game is important

The end result is... penhold and defensive players will suffer. It seems that defending (top or under) is hopeless strategy in highest level, even middle speed loops are.

Xu Xin's play was leaking from both sides and he survived only by his good short game. Defence can be unarmed just by consistent play, like with Boll or Samsonov style.

So the future seems with more physical power, off the bounce flipping smashing an tight short game. Different styles will be reduced and european off the table rallying must change.

I thought SP would benefit from plastic ball but I haven't seen any signs of more SP players yet.

Apart from that I think that extensive chooing would have been here no matter what ball we use. And I really enjoyed most of the matches, plastic ball did not bother me at all (not many broke). And Filus put more preassure on Fan than I have seen any defender done the last years. There were also 5 defenders in the male main tournamnet, and Joo didn't even play. How common is that?

I am happy!

Are we still complaining about the new ball in 2017?

DISASTER .. TOTAL DISASTER...

The novelty equipment is to blame first.

fast ball + fast table + very fast rubber = uncontrollable play; sorrowful spectacle.

Facts of the sorrow.
-- Long rallies, the beauty of the sport, has now gone.
-- The lobbing play, we love so much, gone as well..
--Defensive style is getting less effective.
-- Over 50% of the rallies is a hasty lapse (unforced errors).
