After watching the recent Japan and China Opens, I am wondering if maybe pips will be making a comeback. The Japanese youth seem to be countering the ball with really flat strokes very close to the table, and they look reminiscent of a pips out style of play. Very few counter looping rallies away from the table. I am sure the modern inverted rubbers are allowing them to do this, but it does give one hope for a close to the table attacking style with pips making a return.

Yeah. I noticed it too. Even Sun Yingsha loves taking the ball very early. We know they won't allow her to use pips but it's still interesting to see where the game goes from here

Playing close to the table doesn't mean they aren't using the inverted rubber to put a whole lot of spin on the ball. Watch the strokes - they aren't flat hits. The more spin you put on the ball the faster you can hit it.
