Personally I don't think I could get myself to throw a match or forfeit for any such reason, it just wouldn't feel right.
However I know several people that would seriously consider this... and I do have a lot of respect for these people.
Are these people unethical or unsportsman-like? No, not all, in fact they feel very strongly about sportsmanship and doing the right thing in every other aspect.

So why would they consider it? I think it's because (1) they feel it's perfectly within the rules of the game to forfeit a match, so it's it's not unethical, and (2) they feel very strongly about the success of the club. Certainly in our club, club spirit is very strong, and representing the club is very important, so helping another team to get into the finals when things are so tight and both teams are pretty much even, is something some people do for fellow club members.

You and I might not agree with them, but I do respect these guys for their loyalty to the club and other members.
