12BET has signed a deal with Table Tennis England and the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to be the Official Betting and Gaming Sponsor of the ITTF Team World Cup 2018.

The global betting and gaming brand has come on board for the event, at the Copper Box Arena in London from February 22-25 next year.

Obviously a sponsorship deal can be beneficial for the sport.

Betting on a sport may bring more interest, but I'm not sure if it's beneficial for the sport.

What do you think?

Pro table tennis players are paid so poorly they might be tempted by payoffs from professional gamblers to intentionally lose a match.

If you think betting is good for any sport, consider the criminal elements that usually run the show from behind the scenes.

The interest in the sports will become more of sidelining the players and promoting the criminals activities instead.

Traditionally I think TT was played in Gangster/Mafia dens in Chicago and NY. Probably not desirable to go back to that dark part of history of TT. :P

Read Marty Reisman's book...

https://www.amazon.com/money-player-con ... ref=sr_1_1

Image

The title says it all..

Apparently there was a time (and, to be honest.. maybe it still goes on!) where table tennis and gambling were synonymous. And I don't mean state-sanctioned betting firms taking bets online - I mean bookies standing by the barriers offering odds and taking bets at the US Closed, where the eventual winner won substantial amounts of money by betting on himself. The most fascinating part of the book was how Marty got to be so good - by constant practice against Dick Miles. He'd win money (and other valuables) off suckers at the club all day, and then he'd have to pay it all to Dick Miles in the form of lost bets on games later in the evening. If he didn't bet, Miles wouldn't play against him. This wasn't restricted to the States - he wrote of the tours of Asia in the 1950s, where playing for money (and betting by spectators) was rife. Taiwan, Vietnam, possibly the Philippines..

There was a guy I knew at college who took Marty's book waaaaay too seriously. Marty was a major idol, and he tried to emulate him to the point of constantly offering to play people for money. "Spot you five points!"

So is it good for table tennis? I personally don't think so, but...

Many years ago at the club I played at on Saturday afternoon practice, after a lot of the players (including me) went home there were apparently matches played for hamburgers. This was alluded to by a couple of the players, anyway.

I guess the question is whether table tennis players will get bettor as a result of this. The odds are that they won't.

I suppose playing for hamburgers would be self-correcting over time - win too many hamburgers and you gain weight, and your level goes down...
