Just for fun....

If you HAD to change your playing style, what would you change it to? Assume your level would remain the same. Why?

What style would you least like to play? Why?

I'll chime in after a few people respond.

I'd change to being a chopper, or I guess modern defense now, still looping some fhs. I'd do that because I like longer rallies and I like to move a lot when I play.

My least favorite style would be close to the table inverted blocking, not that it's much of a real competitive style any more, even at a very amateur level. Again I like to move, and while blocking is fun, it doesn't have as much variation as other styles to keep things interesting.

I'd change to a two-winged SP attacker :)

I'd change to short pips and learn to flat hit more. (from being inverted looper)

C-pen SP chop/block close-table. And FH loop-drive with SP. Since I already have the setup for "fun" TSP Spectol + MarkV on a PG-8 blade :-D

Its very strange how I can loop with it somehow. But I tried someone's blade N-9 and same TSP spectol it was unloopable. Sooo much low-throw even with open flat blade angle. Still no idea why.

I've considered taking up hardbat full-time in the past. Wonder what it'd do to my playing level. For some people it really went up afterwards...

I don't think I'd be able to play as a chopper at this level - none of my playing partners can sustain an attack.. I do enjoy looping, wish I didn't miss as much as I do.

J-Pen, perhaps - not sure why. Just to try something different, I guess.

Might sound strange, but because you said you'd be the same level, a full time lobber  :D :Chop:

Dude, you and I are table tennis twinsies, it's kind of weird.

My answer is also Jpen. I started as a Jpen attacker because my mother (who is Japanese) played with that paddle. I always used her paddle as a kid. I still have my old TSP Birmingham, and I have a one ply American Hinoki, and a Butterfly Selebes (2-sided Jpen). Also, Kim Taek Soo and Ryu Seung Min are so amazing to watch. In my opinion, JPEN, TBH and all, it is the most beautiful of styles.

I still play with it, but I'm so far removed from it that I am awful at it anymore. I mean...AWFUL. I have no idea how i blocked and hit with TBH. But my Forehand is far better. I suspect the reason I have struggled with my forehand as a SH player is that I had the mechanics of JPEN forehand heavily ingrained as a kid. I'm about 300 points worse with that style.

My least favorite would be to play as a pushblocker where 98% of my strokes are passive. Even though there are lots of times I do pushblocking in my game, I don't love the style. Nothing wrong with it; I respect it, I just don't enjoy the game that much when I'm doing it full-time. I also understand and appreciate just how much skill it takes.

On the other hand, close-table chop-blocking combined with pushblocking is fun to watch to me...

I would change very little, perhaps become more aggressive. I like the feeling of attacking and proactively winning points.

If I simply had to change I'd probably give C-pen a go with an attacking RPB Inverted/LP combo. I have a couple of C-Pen blades and long ago I did even try this style with my normal SH blade and found I could attack from both sides reasonably well with it. I think with some serious training I could produce a fair game with it. There are certainly some shots that can be played with the pips that are more difficult with SH style. My teammate plays with J-Pen in this styles and twiddles with it swiftly as his blade has a J-Pen block on the handle on both sides. He says its made as a twiddling blade and he attacks from either rubber from either side rather well. Maybe I'd try this instead of C-Pen, but I'm not sure how that would go. The feel of the handle might be just too weird

Two winged SP or inverted hitter. I hate looping. It's just an ingrained habit.
