They should have played. If athletes sabotage a tournament they entered in any pro sport, there should be consequences.

I'm curious to know what is the most heavy fine ever imposed on athlete, when it happened and which sport?

In tennis brocken racket will cost the offending player some 500 bucks.

Is that only the cost of the racket, or in addition to the cost of the racket? :)

I guess suspending players is equivalent to a fine. Number 1 in this article is nearly $2 million in lost earnings due to suspension (NFL):

As for the subject of this thread, the referenced article just seems like an emotional rant to me.

I think the article on ping Sunday is ridiculous. I'm not sure what the sanctiins should be but there should be something. A lot of people were inconvenienced and let down due to a personal agenda, regardless how valid.

If I just didn't show up to my job there would also be repurcussions. There are rules and you can't just have everyone doing what they like.

EmRatThich mentioned that would ITTF fine players for missing the bus ? I hope Internationally ranked players get special limo or shuttle or some kind of high priority transport.

And is "food posioning","diarrhea", "headache", "stomachache" etc considered "injury"/"sickness" ?

And how sick or how injured should you be ?

ITTF the Medical experts of TT ! :-) And if the doctors can "cure" your "injury"/"sickness" can you be forced to play or pay the fine ?

How many fines? Lifetime bans?

If I claim "I'm not feeling well. I want to throwup", can ITTF make me play ? Because mental jitters isn't really a real "sickness"?

Good job ITTF !

And you wonder why Nadal, Federer et. al show up with a dozen wrapped in cellophane in the bag... Not that those two are known for deliberately smashing rackets, but things do happen to the rackets... and the strings alone probably cost 500 bucks..

I agree with Cobalt's assessment of the article. It's a rant. To certain people, everything ITTF does is "ridiculous", no matter what. It doesn't make what the three players did "wrong" (depends on one's point of view), but I find it more admirable and meaningful that they must have known there'd be consequences and were willing to go through with it knowing this to be the case. Doesn't make the sanctions "ridiculous", not at all.
