--Hitting the ball long or hitting the ball into the net. Which one irks you the most and why? :@

Edit: Forgot missing the ball completely, but I think that's unanimously worse that a net or a long shot.

This is so easy to answer for me.

The net is by far worse. I didn't even give gravity or the rotation of the ball a chance to put it back on the table. This is the worst of sins. It also means most likely my technique was simply terrible or I entirely missed the mark. Me going into the net means I am in trouble.

Going long just means I lacked the spin required to land back on the table and is a lesser technical error, specifically against faster balls.

Even when teaching people how to loop I will encourage them to get it over the net but don't worry about going on the table when first learning.

Net. If you hit the net the ball has no chance of ever hitting your opponents side of the table.

Although lets face it, the net is 16cm high. The gap between the net and venue ceiling is often hundreds of cm's. You could therefore argue it takes more skill to hit the net than miss it and go long. Ergo, I must me a very skillful crap player. Every cloud....

I prefer hitting the white edges of the net. I tell every newbie to aim the edge of their racket for that white edging on the net. Hitting long doesn't take skill but returning to the top of the net is hard to do.
