I regularly record how points are won in matches for friends - opponents mistake or friends winner, BH or FH side.

In your experience what style of play is most successful for you in terms of "winning" points.

1. Control game focusing more on placement and keeping the ball in play
2. Aggressive game focusing more on taking the initiative, attacking and going for winning shots or
3. Defensive play, relying on forcing mistakes from opponents

I like to play aggressive, but I have more success with control. Maybe it's shorter swings with control which seems to give me more time and less to break down in my technique, maybe it's the use of spin as a friend to control the ball rather than overpower an opponent. Maybe it's simply taking more care and not playing "instinct" table tennis. Control is not as much fun but right now, it's certainly more effective for me.

For me, it's my service and beyond that, the control game combined with the defensive game via pushing game, lol, I'm still a noob. Fortunately, my pushes/serves seem to be good enough to a certain degree  But I am a low-level player and I'm sure you'd have no trouble beating me Debater :whew:

1 + 3 = ?

I seldom smash people off the table. Never give up on a point. Get the ball back one more time. Try not to play to the other player's strengths. Spin is king (or more correctly deception in spin is king).

Aggression. Hand down. Its how I was trained, be offensive and in control as much as possible. 3rd ball attack, not much passive play when in position to be assertive on the court.

Yes, it's (2) aggressive for me as well, but it would be really interesting to record my stats to see if my perception agrees.

The main reason is that when I attack I feel in control of the point, if I go for placement/control, or defend, I don't feel in control of the point.

Control and defensive play helps me to prolong a rally until my opponent makes a mistake or until there is an opportunity for me to attack. I think that in most of the games that I win, most of my points would probably be the result of attacking strokes in the end. However, control and defensive play often helps to set up the point, so it’s not always easy to say which type of play contributed more to the point.

Defense against attackers (coupled with some awkward close to the table bumps).

Attack against defenders: especially LP hit against backspin, plus some smashes/loops against suitable balls.

I win most games that are close, like 9 to 9 because the other guy lets up trying to be careful.

Control/Aggression - Combined.

I find that too much agro and not enough control = Lose. Too much control, not enough agro = lose.

My rule of thumb set by my coach is to loop/attack at approximately 70% of your "full power" kill. That way your far more consistent but still being very positive. This helps.

You forgot one more option ! Lucky ball :-D 2 or 3 net/edges are enough to make the opponent give up and give you the game

Mainly I have too much difficulty putting away kill shots :-P My game is mostly loop and loop just barely to clear the net ... hence the 4) Luck balls option misssing in your lineup :-D

My amateur loops also produce a fair share of nets, consistent enough to grace the net then land normally (not always dead net). There was one doubles game where most points were won that way

I'm pretty aggressive these days. I attack with 80% power whenever the ball is a bit slow/high. There can be pretty large variances against even the same guy depending on my performance that day. But even if I'm just a 50% success rate, psychologically it feels better than to be smashed by them.

For my style being controlled/relaxed tends to lead to losing, maybe cuz my placement/tempo change is not good,

This is all with players a bit weaker than me. Starting to play with better players now and we'll see

Realistically it's Control that's winning me most of my points right now, even if I haven't fully adjusted to this fact as of yet...

Currently I attack a bit too often, and swing a bit too out of control when I do, but I'm building to a more defensive/control based attack. When it's working it seems like I do more by putting the ball where I want it in a deceptive fashion than I ever have done trying to maintain a high firepower style of play~

I like to imagine that when I'm a better player, I'll use a healthy dose of all three, with the aggression being the finisher, but time will tell~

Ma Long vs Timo Boll. Two of the best players in the world. Watch how many points are won with outright winners. Compare that to how many points are won from mistakes by opponents or controlled attacks which force an error.
