If table tennis doesn't evolve with the times it will die. Or maybe it won't. Often changes to rules and regulations "forced" upon the social and amateur game are met with derision and cries of outrage. But do the powers that be always get it wrong? In your time playing table tennis, what have been the rules or changes in the game which you think have been - good for it from a "viewers experience" and - good for it from a playing perspective Remember, you can only post good rule changes not bad ones. Now there's a challenge! EDIT: So far we have 1. Banning same colour rubbers on both sides 2. Fixing the ball toss so people can no longer hide their serve 3. Getting rid of the volley rule 4. Changing from 21pts to 11pts per game 5. Setting max rubber thickness limit 6. Requiring blades to be constructed of minimum of 85% wood |

I've been fortunate enough to listen to him talking of those championships when he came up to Preston. Murryfield TTC uploaded these videos showing his path to victory. Lot's of mistakes by opponents not being able to pick the spin on the ball. |

Fixing the ball toss so people can't hide their serve any more. some serves were just bloody vicious. At least now you can see the contact point mostly. |

Taking away the volley rule - you could be 20 feet away from the table and the opponent totally mishit their smash so that it could only have hit the table with the aid of a force 10 gale and wind shear enough to break an aeroplane, but it hit your bat on the full and you lost the point. |

Agree here, too, though it was much less important than the above. The situations where it hurt were usually a lot closer to the table, though - in the US they called this "paddle point". More controversially - I'll put in the change to the 40mm ball. Personally, I play a heck of a lot more consistently with the 40mm ball than with the old 38mm one. At the pro level rallies are longer and more spectacular, and there are a lot fewer mysteriously flubbed serve returns. It did make my deadly-wristy pendulum serve a lot less effective than it used to be, though. Iskandar |

I never knew there was a volley rule  I would absolutely hate that rule

I like the rules making the pro court/venue have a defined minimum light and dark background with colored flooring and proper spacing. Sensible rules. 2 color rubber rule made sense. Some of the best ones are ones they did not do... like raise net or change size of table. |

Max rubber thickness and 85% wood rules I like those rules. I wonder if a max racket headsize area is in the rules? Could you play competition or tournaments with Tennis racket size rackets

That said, facing only 2 serves in a row can make it tricky to get used to a serve so it can become harder to win a point on an opponents serve. |
