I want a glue like rubber cement with a consistency of it being thinned with solvent but without the boosting effect or softening of the sponge. Rubber cement without solvent has to thick of a consistency to apply evenly to the blade & rubber from my experience. I like rubber cement due to how well the rubber sticks to the blade and if you hit the blade on the table some how getting a difficult short ball & the rubber separates a little, you can just push it back down and its good as new but not with water based glues from my experience.

Is there a way to thin rubber cement without the solvent or affecting the sponge? With some of the rubbers I use don't want it to make the sponge feel softer or faster.

afaik both rubber cement and current voc glues are latex adhesive, just vary the carrier - solvent vs a water based carrier. Its probably the residual solvent that keeps the latex just sticky enough to re-stick the rubber, but you may be able to get the same effect with a very thick layer (multiple layers) of water based glue.

I'm thinking of maybe applying 2 layers of water base glue to the sponge and then applying rubber cement to the blade & on top of the layers of the water based glue once dried then sticking the rubber to the blade. My idea here is that maybe the water base glue would provide a barrier so the solvent of the rubber cement doesn't affect the sponge and the water base glue doesn't affect the wood. Just an idea but not sure of the nature of the solvent on water based glue & if it dissolves that too.

A solvent based rubber glue will dissolve the latex from the water based glue.
