I was just thinking what would be the impact of allowing volleying in table table. Say you volley the ball after the serve, would it change the game much? Would it make it more exciting?

I'm not proposing a new rule, just a hypothetical situation to see how it would impact on the game.

I'm not sure about this.. I think there's a possibility that if volleys become part of tt than the defensive style will die. I'm pretty sure that on a higher level after more volley practising it can become a lethal weapon against defense(like volley-stopping a chop or something like that).

There goes my lobbing.

haggisv, you had better don your flame-proof suit for the volley of opposition to another change in the rules.

Would mean that the ball isn't out until it hits the floor. Would that mean that if it hit the opponent on the full, like tennis, you lose the point? Might as just aim for the player.

Hmmmm sounds like fun. :)

Why not play a few games that way to see what happens or is possible? Should be interesting if anything... You could also stage points (where the serve is agreed upon so the receiver can try different things).

No no, don't get me wrong, I definitely DON'T want this, but thought thought is was an interesting topic, because in Tennis volleying makes the game a lot more exciting IMO... but I agree that in table tennis it would kill off certain styles, which would be very bad.

Thanks so-devo. :)

I thought that was what it was but not a tennis player.

Think it would ruin the game. :(

I think this will make the 3rd ball attack very effective.
A McEnroe in table tennis?

Hitting the ball just after has passed the net wouldn't be useful in tabletennis. In case something like the tennis-volley should be allowed there have to be additional rules, like not on serve or >3rd ball at least. But effectively and more tennis-like would be a volley that should be allowed by directly hitting a ball coming from above head-height.

I suppose, to play Devil's Advocate, I should point out that it might also lead to the CREATION of other new styles.

Generally, I would not want this, but if at all we did say om let's do this then it should still not be allowed on serves.
