What does it mean to be a master of either penhold or shakehand?
In a match between a master penholder and a master shakehander, who do you think would win and why?

What does it mean to be a "master", anyway? And who's a "master" - Ma Long? Ovtcharov? Anyone rated over 2000? Define this and you have your answer.

As to your second question - it depends. Would Xu Xin be a "master of penhold"? If so, would, say, Khanak Jha be a "master of shakehands"? In this case, you know who's going to win. The results would be different if it were, say, Xu Xin vs. Ma Long.

Sounds a little silly, does it? I think what you're trying to get at is which grip is "superior". Well, look at the numbers in the top 20, say. The answer is obvious.

Mastery of C-pen is a very different goal-post compared to Shakehand mastery.

C-pen legends like LGL, MaLin, Wang Hao, etc differed in their level of mastery and style of play.

Similarly SH players like Ma Long, WangLiqin, ZJK, etc again have different skillsets that they have mastered. Take JO Waldner what a legend of block and control !

I don't think there is a player who has completely "mastered" Shakehand or Penhold.

Also the way in which younger players keep displacing older players reduces the level of "tech" transfer and old abilities get replaced with newer ones.

Few players like Timo Boll or Vlady have such long and illustrious careers and well into adapting to the new game changes and dynamics.
