Why do ppl say that there is no spin variation ability with long pips?
It's so easy to do side spin chops, downspin and no spin chops. People say that the ball is always down spin because of the ox factor but I disagree.

When I do a sidespin, there is a moderate amount to of downspin lacking when compared to the regular down spin chop and it curves too.

When I do a no spin chop, there is minimal amount ts of spin and sometimes it's so dead it comes back as a dead ball

It's all a question of degree. It's not that there's NO spin variation with OX so much as there's LESS spin variation with OX. This is the same as comparing a new inverted rubber to the comparatively dead rubber on a recreational paddle. The recreational rubber can create SOME spin variation, but it's not nearly as much as with a normal inverted rubber.

Compared to what? Long pips with sponge? Or inverted? Come to think of it.. I'm not entirely sure when you'd choose OX and when not...

By the way, shouldn't this go under the Long Pips section?

Also, grip of the topsheet varies from pip to pip. Some grip a lot more... 755 or Feint Long 3 are examples of this. In OX, they vary plenty.

But I think that, at a certain level, if a looper loops with enough spin and force there is almost no variation no matter the pip. The question is, can the looper maintain that level of loop? Most can't.

When people at our level complain of a lack of variation, it's usually due to the balls that have less spin. if a pip savvy person soft loops and keeps the ball low spin, you may be able to vary, but it won't be enough to matter...meaning they can use the same bat speed and angle to hit the ball whether you chop heavy or not.
Of course, that may be true of most sponged LPs too...

I've been thinking about this recently and I partially agree with you. For the average, run-of-the-mill club player, CONSISTENCY > Variation.

Something Kees pointed out long ago is that you can't have variation without consistency first. A pattern must be established before it can be broken.

So if you really like chopping with OX, go for it! You can still vary the spin somewhat (especially if you twiddle), and you may find the boost in your service reception and table game to be beneficial as well!

Spin variation is mainly a weapon for classic passive defense.
If you counter attack regularly speed variation become much more dangerous.
