Over the next few days, I'll post 3 scenarios and ask the question "would you cheat to win"

Scenario 1

You are playing someone you don't like in a local league match. It's match point to your opponent.

You really can't stand this person. They "Cho" loudly after ever point they win. They cry out "allez". They wipe their hand on the table by the net regularly. They complain about movement from other tables and spectators. They never apologise for a net or an edge they get but are quick to complain when you get one.

The rally starts, it's fast and furious. They heat a screaming FH flat and hard, it clips the net, then the faintest touch on your end line. The umpire calls it your point. Your obnoxious opponent screams in anquish "another ***$£* net, when will I get one in my favour *-*+"^^&".

Only you it seems know your opponent's ball clipped your side of the table.

What do you do?

I'd give the point. But that doesn't mean I'd be happy about it

If I dislike the player, and he is obnoxious, and the worst thing to happen to table tennis, but does not cheat, I will give him the point. If he tries to cheat at any given moment, and tries to get away with illegal serves and tries to bend the rules yet is the sweetest person you could imagine I would stay silent. I believe in karma.

Give the point. My ethics, integrity etc are mine, not affected by what they do. It is me that sleeps easily at night over my behavior.

There is a big difference between sportsmanship and gamesmanship.

Sportsmanship = I play the sport as it should be played, in the spirit of it if you like. If I win it is because I have played both according to the rules and according to the spirit of the rules.
Gamesmanship = I play to win, and as long as what I have done is not against any of the literal rules and can be argued not to have transgressed the literal rules in a court of law, then I will.

If someone is on match point and gets a "lucky break" then everything leading up to that point has led them to be in that position, so they deserve it, obnoxiousness or not.

I take great pride in calling those type of balls. I don't care who I'm playing.

I would much rather lose than win by cheating, and i really love to win!! I care about this so much that i will even give away points if i am genuinely unsure if it hit the edge or not.

As much as I would love to let it go my way just to let them burn... I couldn't do it and would call the edge. I would like to think that my opponents would do the same. I would probably have words to share with that player though.
