I still would like to hear how the system measures the spin of the ball. Especially as they were reporting over 6,000 RPM at the China Open. If the camera is running at a 1,000 frames per second, they are using 10 frames to read a single rotation. But what do the cameras actually read on the ball to pick that up? It's quite impressive if they are doing all the necessary processing in near real time. And, of course, if it's accurate, it opens the way to some objective testing of equipment maybe.

Doppler radar, maybe? I don't think balls are radio reflectors, though.

Golf again, like in the page igorponger linked to. Ball color and size are similar, so it should be transferable to TT.
https://www.golf-simulators.com/BallSpinCamSetup.html
The ball spin detection method consists of capturing 2 images of the ball in flight shortly after club impact to the ball.

Those indoor golf simulators have been around for a while, and my impression is that they do a good job of simulating trajectory. Prediction of what the trajectory would be requires really good detection of both spin and speed, and real-time response, so I guess the technology required is quite mature by now.

Added challenge compared to golf: in table tennis the ball is moving before impact. The short exposure time means that you need good lighting and large lens aperture, and a wider viewport. Large aperture means minimal focus depth, so you need autofocus fast enough (and with tracking precise enough) to follow the ball. I guess that this requires better performance than you get with a consumer-grade SLR camera, but it makes sense that it is within reach with modern pro equipment designed for the task. The price, $3000 with the computer, is not more than your average dedicated amateur photographer will have paid for his gear. Not exactly cheap if you consider buying it to a small club or for private use, but easily within budget for a major broadcaster. To those companies it would be just another camera...

Testing VRS for Men's World Cup 2019
ITTF EC Meeting, October 2019 wrote:
7.14 Video review system

The ITTF CEO, Mr. Steve Dainton, stated that a tender process was run to identify a company for implementing Table Tennis Review. The idea had been floated for many years but after some issues at the WTTC and after discussion with Mr Maehara, it was agreed that it was important, and the process was speeded-up. Several bids were received and after an evaluation process one company was identified as the most suitable option for testing at the Men’s World Cup. Should the tests are positive, the plan would be to fully implement the system at the World Tour Grand Finals.
Mr. Dainton mentioned that the implementation is done using 10 cameras and it’s a combination of visual animations and real images, depending on the type of challenge. Challenges will be for a range of items like edge balls, nets, double strikes, service, toss etc.
The short-term intention is to only use TTR for players to be entitled to challenge an umpire’s decision with a limit in the number of challenges (2 or 3 per a game, with the number of challenges a player has being kept as far as he/she gets a positive review of the challenge).

HOW TTVR (Table Tennis Video Review) WORKS

https://ittf.cdnomega.com/eu/2019/12/TT ... 019_11.pdf
The original ITTF clause has as follows
Quote:
... [1] A player cannot request TTR in case an umpire has not called a false service for the opponent
The grammatical construction sounds a kind of pidgin English to my mind.

A better understandable version of the ITTF clause [1]. For the good of all OOAK Forum dwellers.
Quote:
[1 v.] In the event that player's serving action has got penalized, and he/she really believes that he did made a good serve, it is allowed for him/her to ask for TTR.

Now *that* sounds like "a kind of pidgin" to me.

What it means is that if I as a receiver, have not been penalised I cannot ask for a review. I cannot appeal that a service was hidden.

Yup.. doesn't quite sound fair.. In lawn tennis you can appeal serves as a receiver.
