If you look more carefully at the thread list, you'll see that the first post was actually made by Speedplay, a former member who deleted his own posts, so we can't see what he wrote there to start this thread. ;)

Hirano is clearly very talented, but I feel she has a way to go to fully develop. Her game is built around speed and rhythm, and she needs a little extra string to her bow.

Of course, she has time on her side. I have been expecting great things from her since the Women's World Cup which she won a few months ago, beating Feng Tianwei in the final. But we know what happened in the Korea Open. Ishikawa beat Hirano 4-0, because she knows Miu's game and can disrupt it. And then Feng won the final, beating Ishikawa 4-2.

But it does show that what makes great table tennis players is great coaching, great support systems, and a lot of hard work. The Chinese team has understood this for a long time. The Japanese team is now doing what they need to put on a good show at the next Olympics. But I wouldn't be counting the Chinese out just yet.

Hirano v Ito in 2012. Amazing how matter-of-fact they are.

So those two have been playing against each other since they were.. what, 5? The poor kids... how would you feel at their age when confronted by those two loud, aggressive "kowai oniisan-tachi"...

Note the two guys play penhold. Probably still much more common among non-serious players their age, because most people (or at least, most rec players) played penhold at the time when they were in school..

Well, often people forgot 2 advantages of penhold,

Far bigger margin of error on forehand,

Far better blade feel and minute control overall

Ball juggling and serving penhold is easier, and,

In low level play, the opponent not that capable to lock our forehand ;)

Part of it is what you are used to, but I agree with this for the most part. My FH suffered (Suffers) since I changed from JPEN to SH. I still play Jpen for fun and instantly my serves and FH are better.

My BH blocking suffered thought in my time away. Used to be far better.

Miu was the happy child. Mima Ito and Ai Fukuhara were both terrible cry-babies :-P There's a whole buncha videos of matches, trainings, special shows, programmes with "Ai-chan" and "Mima-chan" being made to cry by staging them losing points :-P

I dunno why the Japanese think its funny to make fun of kids bawling their eyes out. :?:

The point was, when those guys were kids (1960s, 1970s), EVERYONE played penhold. It was that way here, and I'm sure it was that way in Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea and Hong Kong. All the cheap bats sold in bookstores were penhold. The few shakehands players were serious players (lots of serious penhold players too, of course, in fact a lot more of them than the shakehands players).

Came across these:

Wow.. the Thais don't look overmatched at all, in fact they take two games. Those DHS show tables look WEIRD (and distracting, from the high camera angle).

This seems to be taken directly from Japanese TV, probably with the commercials (if there were any) edited out. None of the usual EmRatThich commentary. Helps if you understand a little Japanese. Seems to be from the Round of 32 at the WC, against Sawettabut (ranked 60) again. As at the WTTC, one of the courts was set aside for matches involving Japan, and it was absolutely surrounded by cameras from one of the Japanese networks.

Another early round match:
