Cool point #1. We all don't just decide to galvinate around the country and play TT with our forum members whenever we feel like it, so this was a great opportunity for me, eing able to drive 2500 km from Oklahoma to Baltimore/Washington DC. I usually don't get a chance to do any training, just play matches once a week if the wife isn't all up in arms. So far I have been able to visit 5 clubs in the span of a week and train at least a part of a time. I have probably trained more this week than I have been able to do all of 2007. Man, there are a ton of Chinese in the DC area that play TT. I wish a few of them were in my area in Oklahoma.

BogeyHunter was cool enough to provide me some structured training today for 3 or 4 hours. I also got to play 4 matches. I did better in my second match against BogeyHunter and scored enough points to make it interesting, but his class is beyond mine. What I liked about the match is he promised not let me get him with my backhand, as I was consistant enough on the BH and too erratic on the FH. Some stuff worked better than others. Learning to brush under in front of the ball didn't work too well. I looked like a six year old doing that. BogeyHunter took video and everyone gets to have a laugh at my expense. I really enjoyed the workout, especially where I got to loop underspin for 20-25 minutes straight. BogeyHunter could really dig down and return what my best loops. He gave me a workout fit for a warrior. All in all, I couldn't ask for more fun and the chance to train and play. I will try to compete in a tourney next week with BogeyHunter and his club mates.

I would like that too.

It's nice to put a face on the name. Especially with people you exchange ideas with.

Members without spouses, there's an interesting proposition.

Starlog 2318 HRS... I tried using Bogeyhunter's tips for short serves. Ma Lin's video helped me greatly and I increaded my % but need more spin, control and placement for this serve to be useful in a match, which I will do a lot of at a round robin tourney. I entered two events and will play a LOT of matches. For USD $55, I had jolly well better play a lot to get my money's worth! I got a tripod today and now can take video. I will post some if it doesn't bore the crap outta anyone or make them puke.

Well....... I can post but so far I decide to send PM to speed and der_E coz it become the things of 2-3 ppls(Me and those 2). And it's not really interesting coz it's him doing somethings again and again and again. And it's not a pro instruction or anything like that....it's ametuer-ish.

D_E is the one looping, right? I don't know if it was just the camera angle, but it looked like he was swinging a bit too much with his arm, as opposed to leading his arm with his body, and that as a result he was swinging too much upwards and not enough forwards.

Thanx for the positive words, Joo Seon Seng Nim.

I make this thread to detail some of the stuff on this trip, so I don't pollute it elsewhere.

Night no. 7, visited my 6th club. (the next tourney will probably be my last new club until I hit the road again) Had a terrible time handling super slow balls on both wings. I discover that I realy need to learn how to both get into position to flat hit nd how to get into position and slow control loop these. I played so far below my already not so high level that it was rediculous. USATT 1300 could have wasted me yesterday. Even at the clubs I go to here, it is hard to train. There are simply too many players waiting. At one place, I can train 20 minuts and then leave the table, as it can take that much time to lose a match. Then, I get to wait at another table and so on. I really wish these places would be open later. Three hours feels like such a short time. Time really goes by when you are enjoying the exercise and sport.

Standing around while my wife shops wears me down. Holding a paddle in my hand playing at the table energizes me. Standing on the sideline waiting for a match or practice drives me nuts, I gotta be doing something. Rest assured, I will really go all out Saturday doing two round robin events and it will only increase my experience, hopefully my game (if I tape and anylize it, and learn from it), and my conditioning. Defineately my happiness.

Hobbs, love the avatar!

If anything, I probably wasn't swinging upwards enough on some of the balls. Bogeyhunter was returning backspin. I was trying to to slow or medium loop the first one. I think you are right that I do use a lot of arm, but I feel I also use a lot of legs if I remember to get down and wait for the ball.

Night 8, I got 30 balls from Wallmart and a small, cheap $2 basket. I was able to get a table for an hour without a lot of players requesting matches. This let me train a bit. I had to hit with a USATT 900 player, but hey, it was still good. I let him practice the loop drive and I got to practice something I really need to improve on, I had him hit no spin balls just off the endline for me to loop. Training is helping me better apply what I know, but yet still fail to execute in a match. I am beginning to become more aware of my tendency to move my position more to the back than I need and improve it.

Hi Der-
Great trip!!! I would have carried your bags and cleaned your bat every day to go on that one.
I hope you would like comments on the video because I have one. In the 12 min vid, Der loops, I see a major flaw in your style. On forhand and backhand, worse on backhand, you are standing on ONE foot at contact on almost every shot. You pull your left leg up, I think trying to get more power.
On forhand, your weight transfer should be from right foot to left foot. You are left standing on your right foot most of the time. At the end of the forhand, weight should be on the Left foot. Your left foot is in the air.
On backhand, weight goes from left to right foot. You pull your left leg up and back, leaving you standing on your right foot most of the time.
If I was your coach, this would be the first thing I would fix. Footwork. Not having a solid platform at contact has to cause inconsistancy.
I am going to watch the rest of the vids when I get the chance. With the camera angle on that vid, I could not be sure about one other thing I "think" I saw. On some of your forhand loops, you are contacting the ball too far in front of you and folding the wrist back to compensate for direction I won't be sure unless there is another vid from a different angle.
I do ALOT of coaching and these are the type of things I look for. I am sure about the footwork, maybe the loop contact point.
I am retired with not much $$$ so can't afford a vid camera. The guy that said he would loan me one backed out. If I get one, I will try and make some vids. I really think anybody that puts themselves on here in video deserves ALOT of credit and I hope you take my comments as they are meant. To help one of my fav guys on this forum. I look for your posts all the time. Best of luck in your game. :D

well.....since some of us are interrested, I'll throw some material we did the last time Der_E worked with me.

What I wanted him to do : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8TYp1LLwEU

What he did : http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 2592805154
He did better and better. I'll let him explain what we were trying to do.
Hope it is useful for some beginners.
I feel good to be a little part of his TT country trip. I'm lucky ...wait to see my Denver trip!!!

Watch out! Speedplay!!!
