I've been thinking about this some time and seeing how it was the Brits who invented the game, I assume that shakehand grip was the first, but is there any theories on how the penhold grip was "made up"? And the variations with it, such as C-pen and J-pen? Could it have something to do with how we hold our ... (dictionaries suggestion: )
1. CUTLERY
2. DEAD RECKONING
3. SET OF INSTRUMENTS
4. SET OF KNIFE
5. FLATWARE
6. SILVERWARE

That is the only theory I've been able to work out.

...pens

Well, I believe it came at how we hold pens, since its quite similar, and the name itself quite suggests that.

Yes, but that wouldn't explain why Europeans use shake-hand grip, cause I do believe we hold the pen in the same way. But, Silverware vs chop sticks, that could be the answer.

No wonder my grip is so funky. I don't hold a pen right, so maybe that's why I don't hold a paddle right.

My grip has been described by others as a bit of a combination between shakehand and Seemiller. It's screwy but is comfortable and works for me.
