Trying to decide if i should get the Ipong or a Newgy540. I already decided that Newgy 540 is the best for its felixibilty compared to the Ipong, BUT the Ipong is priced at $112(w/ shipping) compared to the $258 (w/ shipping) Newgy 540. |(

Or if i should just save up and get the Newgy 1040.
Does the oscillation make a difference?
Does a robot help improvement especially the Loop against Backspin shoots?

Thanks in advance!

If you have a table and no one to train with, a robot can be your best friend. It will also tirelessly feed you practice balls without charging by the hour. :D

Oscillation is a good feature as it lets you do things like the Falkenberg Drill to work on your strokes and your footwork.

Robots can absolutely help you practice your loop.

I'd recommend saving up for the best robot you can afford and also get yourself a collection net to save yourself from a lot of the misery of ball pickup.

I would recommend you pay a little more, and get the 540. The 540 has more controls and can produce more spin, and is more variable... Apart from that, Newgy has a great reputation and is well supported...

One of the coaches at my club bought an iPong and I've used it about a dozen times. It only has one speed and is basically only good at throwing medium speed medium topspin balls. (The speed setting only changes the time between each throw which can be made less than 1 sec per throw so that part can be fast.) It has an underspin setting but it is worthless...just throws no spin balls. I guess that might be worth something if practicing against no spin is something you are looking for. Also, there is no adjustment for length of the throw. Anything other than crosscourt and it will just barely keep the ball on the table even when slid as far back as possible. I managed to adjust it a bit by placing an object on the back edge to tip it slightly forward. You could do this and move it closer to the net to practice faster shots. But still quite awkward and not very realistic as the balls then are quite high over the net. Another annoying aspect is that the iPong is made of hard plastic so when it is hit by a returned ball it "cracks" REALLY loud and sends the ball flying who knows where rather than into the catch net. So you will need to wrap it in bubble wrap or some kind of sponge. Finally, the machine has a tendency to jam. I rarely had a session when it didn't jam at least once and it is very hard to un-jam. iPong might be OK if someone gave it to you or you won it as a prize, but I personally wouldn't buy one.

For ball pickup, our club has these plastic boxes cutout on hte bottom and had fishing string attached in a checker fashion, then added a broomstick handle. You simply press the bottom of the box with the cross strings over the balls and the balls move the strings a little and they move into the box. Simple to construct, cost effective and easy to use.

Thanks guys. The ipong is suppose to be a prpesent but good thing she had mentioned it to me before buying it. Now i could just give her more money to the original amount she was going to spend on the ipong and try to get me a Newgy. Thanks guys
