Came across this thing just now:

Reminds me, for some reason, of a Dalek - or R2D2. Must be the cheapest robot on the planet - USD173 plus another USD65 or so for shipping.

This isn't what people here are referring to as the Emperor robot, is it?

Iskandar, great to see you back contributing again after all these years. I remember you from the rec-sport-table-tennis days.

That robot you reference is a Chinese-knock off of the iPong robots, distributed by Joola and created by Richard Lee. I haven't tried one yet, but the iPong's are very basic and provide decent quality for the price. BTW, their cheapest model is the battery powered (requiring if I recall correctly something like 8 AA batteries) Topspin model. I've seen it listed for a about $50-60 before, so that is the cheapest one I've ever seen.

The Super Emperor robot is made by SuperMaster and that brand started off as a knockoff of the Newgy 2040 robot. They've since evolved to include two throw wheels and a few other changes like painting the black plastic to be a golden hue to make it more distinguishable from Newgy, but their build quality is very low, IMO. The Super Emperor is their latest model. I haven't tested it out yet, but I do have one ready to go when I find the time.

Come to think - "Huipang" is probably a corruption of "iPong". ;)

Where have all the other rec.sport.table-tennis folk gone? Who else posts here? Apparently (when I checked last month) that he-who-shall-not-be-named (or rather, the-one-with-a-thousand-names) still posts on Usenet!

I just found out about this. I personally know the guy who designed the I-Pong... really nice guy and I'm pretty sure he has the I-Pong patent protected. I'll have to pass this on to him.
