The only other robot I have any experience with is the Newgy RoboPong 2040 (and I was thinking.. hey, it's only 2016! ). Seems reliable enough.. and it's not terribly expensive. It does come down as one unit with it's net and goes on the table fairly quickly. $579 from newgy.com. If I had a table set up permanently I'd get one of these.

Only problem with that, as far as I can see, is that spin is tied to speed.

Very much so and backspin is impossible.

The Xushaofa is quite old now. Does anybody know if it takes 40mm balls? I think I'm leaning towards that or the iPong Master v300.

Yes, the Xushaofa takes the new 40+ plastic balls. When I bought it originally, it included about 100 practice balls - I don't know what they would supply now.

On the Robo-pong 2040? The website says you can have backspin:

https://www.newgy.com/p-187-robo-pong-2040.aspx

I suspect you'd have to turn the head upside down or something of the sort to get the backspin. Probably true about spin being dependent on speed, though.

I had a Newgy RoboPong 2050 and sold it to upgrade to a 2 wheel second hand robot.
I would recommend paying more for a robot that can do one or more backspin and then a forehand etc rather than the newgy which is all one spin until you change it manually.

Yes it does backspin but it's extremely heavy, unrealistic and nearly impossible to loop.

I'm gonna go with the Xushaofa. Meets my criteria, about what I expected to pay and I like the idea of the progressive drill system. Thanks for the help all! Wont be for a few months, but I'll post my experiences and some videos.

I've heard a lot of people say this about the newgy. However, I've played choppers that produce more underpin and my amicus pro can produce more underspin . Anyway, I'd recommend the newgy 2050 or the amicus if you can afford it.

Getting it from tabletennisworld.com.au and it's $1500. Don't want the newgy because spin and speed are locked together.
