I and my friend have designed new table tennis robot to be use for practice. It's performance seem to be much better than what I expected. So, just want to show it's VDOs.

1. Fixed Head Test

2. Swinged Head Test

3. Underspin Test

4. Duo Test

I would like to emphosize to look carefully on the ball path (close to human topspin) and the ball drop point (very consistance).

Key design concept.

1. Use High Speed Industrial D.C. Motor (5,000 rpm / min) --> This robot can deliver High Spin , Consistance speed & High durability. Use potentiometer to vary resistance for adjust motor speed.

2. The ball driving roller (connect to motor) --> consist of real table tennis rubber (Hallmark Power Spin). So less slippage (between roller & ball) , proper ratio between spin & speed (close to human topspin).

3. Easy head angle adjustment. The adjusting screw is easy reaching and adjust. Can adjust by using only 1 hand. The angle adjustment can be done only within 10 second.

Further improvement

1. Put 1 additional timer to ensure motor can reach target speed before sending the first ball

Thanks for your answer, have you got a good idea of how much it cost you PL?

As Haggisv said, its very impressive! :D

This machine (demo) cost me ~ 700 USD due to the work on design & fabrication + trial & error. However, for the commercial version , I think it can be sold at ~ 450 USD excluding training balls. However,we go to factory for mass production (minimum 100 ea) , I think price will be less than 400 USD.

how about a model with a second motor and roller going in the opposite direction. Set one for 5000RPM, the other for 3000RPM and get Super spin. Could get more spin plus keep the speed down that way. :D

The easier way to increase spin but keep speed down is by changing the rubber (of driving roller) from power spin to tacker (& slower) rubber). It will cost you only less than 8 USD (using 999T Chiness Sponge rubber). That will be the option if someone need. In other hand , I can make the ball to be faster but less spin by changing the rubber of driving roller to Europian rubber but it may cost more because of the rubber price.

And if you want the opposite spin, you can simply use a long pimple rubber, with good spin reversal

Good stuff, any chance of seeing close ups of the head/feed motors e.t.c.? - I'm curious though, why do you use a potentiometer to control the speed of the motor, and not PWM [pulse width modulation] - this would give better torque at the lower speeds and wouldnt mean you have to change the rubber? [just a suggestion]

Thanks for your suggestion bollsbrother). However, the machine has to be cost attractive so it's the easiest (and cheapest) way to go but give the adequate result.

Also it's very easy to change the rubber so it will help the player to be familiar with difference kind of rubbers to play with (Chiness rubber , Europian Rubber and Japanese Rubber).
