I know we've had a few topics on this before, but I don't seem to be able to find it :(

I seem to have developed a tennis elbow... which got a lot worse after yesterday's practice. It's been slightly sore for a few weeks, but after yesterday it's much more sore. I'm quite sure it's one of the tendons, and I don't think I've actually torn anything, as it's slowly developed and got worse after repetitive practice of a certain routine.

So my question is, what's the best way to make it heal the quickest? Since there is no swelling, I don't think cold packs will do anything, but perhaps heat packs will help? Would anyone recommend creams like 'deep heat'? Or would anti-inflammatary creams like Voltaren help?

Also if I do continue playing, would an elbow brace be a good idea?

Cheers guys!

PS I know we've discussed having a dedicated section to injuries and recovery topics before, which does not seem like a bad idea now, as these types of injuries are probably quite common.

alternate hot and cold compresses and if necessary, take something like nimesulide 2x a day (if you are not allergic of course). and there is this little thing called "Tenex" that helps a lot. http://www.tennis-elbow.com take a look, it woks great for me.

I had table tennis elbow 2 yrs ago. I put up with it for a couple of months because it did not really affect my play. However it was sore and not getting better. I tried a brace which did help a bit. Eventually I got sick of it and went to a physiotherapist. He gave me three exercises . First one was stand next to a wall 100mm away and place palm of hand against wall and push. Repeat x 10. Next hold a broomstick with thumb on top. Hold horizontal and raise broom up with fingers. You can only lift small amount of length to start with. Repeat x 10. Third one, get a towel hold with both hands arms outstretched and clench wrists squeezing towel.Do reps of ten increase if elbow is not worse than day before. It is supposed to hurt while doing exercise. My elbow improved after a few days. It took a few months to almost completely fix it.

Alex, request your wife to go to a Chinese store to buy a Chinese made sport medicated treatment oil (華陀活絡油) or (黄道益活絡油)(for external use only). Have her rub your elbow with the oil while you sit and relax, repeat as needed.

You can thank me later. ;)

One of the earlier threads on tennis elbow - "Ouch! Sore elbow" - included a number of suggestions. My starting point would be here: rubber tensor bar. Good luck.

Have you considered acupuncture? I never had tennis elbow but had relief and success for other things.

A couple of months rest may be needed including anything in your everyday routine that causes the pain,i saw a physio who gave me ultrasound treatment and a rather painful massage to break up the inflammation but it did work(can`t remember how many visits),you might also look at your tt equipment when you come back ,i.e make sure your blade/rubbers combination is not too heavy,i always try to keep it under 150 g and this seems ok,adding softgrip to the handle is a tip from the coach here(and he`s been around a long time!)as it opens the fingers a little and you don`t have to squeeze as hard in most situations which relieves the stress on the tendons

That is right. The ultrasound treatment is painful and good for nothing. I got a tennis elbow as well as a golfer elbow in 2008 during my windsurf holidays in Denmark. A little too much wind, the sail a little too big and me a little too long fighting and the desaster arose. I had to stop table tennis for 3 months - played with my left hand with the beginners  - .

What did help me ?

- "manuelle Therapie" I do not know the English term. It means that the physiotherapist presses his finger tip on a hurting point in one of your muscles as close as possible to the elbow and starts a vibrato in a 90° angle to the muscle for some minutes. Then he looks for the next point a little farther away from the elbow and so on ... . This loosens the muscle and helps a lot.

- stretching (there are description of this in the internet) of muscles around the elbow

- a lighter racket <150g

- a suitable elbow brace

This way I could play again. However after every training there was a slight irritation which fortunately calmed down the next days.

The real breakthrough came when I started a muscle training in the fitness center. So far I went there for sustaining and muscular endurance. In that spring I realized that I could no longer make a pull up hanging on stretched arms. So I said to myself "there shall be muscles !" and started exercises with weights at 80% of maximum and just 5-8x. I did this also for the rotatory muscles around the elbow. Although my musculature is still definetely more of the Woody Allen type than of Arnold Schwarzenegger, to my great surprise I realized that after 3 weeks I had NO TROUBLES AT ALL ANYMORE after table tennis. Meanwhile my racket weight is at 170g without any problems. The only thing I still do is the elbow brace - kind of ritualistic action.

Getting an even lighter bat should be a challenge...I think my current bat is about 140g.

I don't the bat caused the problem (although no doubt it can contribute), but my repetitive attacking with the LPs with a 'swiping type' action is probably the culprit, although it's done wonders for my game! :o

I discussed this too with the m.d. => it is not without risk due to possible infection.

This is by far the best elbow brace I have ever used. MNNB recommended it. Sahmaniac tried everything for his TT elbow. Then I gave him aircast and ordered myself a new one and him another. Mine flared up again for a little while, while I was waiting for it to come. I wore my new one a couple of weeks and it settled down again and I'm not wearing it again. Sahmaniac is still wearing his as his TT elbow is worse than mine, but he is still able to play at least.

These are also excellent for developing the right muscles to help prevent TT elbow.

I've never found a cream or ointment to be a cure to it. Mine recurs now and then, but the aircast helps a LOT!!

Last year I went to a specialist and he got me to have a blood injection. They take blood from your vein and immediately inject (using ultrasound) into the tennis elbow tendon. It hurts like hell but it worked (i had suffered from it for quite some time). Takes a while to recover though - I wasnt allowed to play for a month or two (can't remember which).
