After playing 3 out of 4 days over the past weekend to get ready for a tournament this Saturday, I developed a steady, dull pain above my left ankle. Went to the doc and she said I have tendinitis and that I need to wear lace-up ankle braces when I play. Just a little background, I already wear high top basketball shoes to play because my ankles are both bad and have been sprained many times over the years. I also badly sprained my left foot and ankle a few years ago when I fell down some stairs. So now I have to wear high top shoes and wear lace-up braces on both feet. She gave me some Naproxin to take for the next few days and also said to ice it down at night. At least she didn't say anything about not playing, so right now I'm still planning on playing in the tournament. I just hope the braces don't limit my mobility too much. Anybody have any experience with tendinitis like this? It's above my left ankle, but since I have a history of problems in both she said I needed to wear the braces on both.

ouch...braces for the ankles? And I thought braces for my teeth were bad enough.....
I have the utmost sympathy for you, limited mobility while playing tt is not fun at all.

Well it depends.. If by ankle braces you mean something like this: http://www.betterbraces.com/aircast-a60-ankle-support
then you should be fine.. I've played with something very very similar for a few weeks when I was still recovering after my torn ankle, and it was more or less ok. But I was playing with low profile shoes that I think helped a bit to get better mobility.

Yes I had that happen with both ankles back 20 years ago, I was playing softball 4 days a week and also playing table tennis. I have been over the last 15 years stretch myself out including my ankle area. (*Stretch out the Achiles tendon area)
It is painful and naprosin does help as well as cold compress.(ICE) stay off them for about two weeks and start slowly getting them limber and slowly stretch.
Painful

These are what my doctor recommended, the type that lace up so the support stays more firm:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E2F392/

They're supposed to arrive today, so I will be able to use them at the club tomorrow.

Well, I played for almost two hours straight last night and the ankle feels good this morning. Iced it down when I got home last night too. Hopefully that's a good sign for the tournament this weekend, I have big hopes for a strong finish to the year.

Have a look at the discussion on Elmore Oil elsewhere on this forum. It's an all natural topical pain relief from Australia and works by reducing any inflammation. I'm sure it will help and it will not do you any harm! Greg

Re the previous post, Patellar tendonitis is not in the ankle.

The tendons take longer to recover as muscles when injured, so it is likely not a thing that cures in a couple days.

Another thing to consider is when using a brace, you are making something else (other somethings) use more force and get stronger making possibly even more of a muscle imbalance. The area being braced doesn't get much muscle work and become weaker. When one goes back to without brace, the stronger muscles overpower teh weaker ones and you could get nasty pains again. That could be mitigated a lot by playing some without brace during the process. It is good to push the injured area some to the level it is is fit for duty. That is a principle.

You as the injured one have a much better level of awareness of what is needed than any of us.

Recently I have started to try to play without the ankle braces, with low cut shoes, and so far it's going fine. I'm going to continue to be very careful and go back to wearing the braces if it starts hurting even just a little.

Did these braces work?

How long could you play for before they cause pain where the hole at the heel is?

I have the velcro ones but I can only wear them for about 30 or 45 min before they start to hurt.

I take the naproxin and use a lot of topical pain stuff.

The braces worked great. Didn't have any pain with them, and as long as I had them properly adjusted in my shoes, I didn't get any problems around the heel. One thing I will note, because they're a little bulky, so I had to start buying shoes that were about a half size bigger than normal to accommodate them. But they definitely helped to support it. My doctor recommended the lace-up type because they can be adjusted to fit the exact firmness that was needed better than the slip on or velcro type (in her opinion). They take a little getting used to, but once I did I didn't really notice that they hurt my movement (not that I moved that much anyway, LOL). Anyway, now I'm at the point where I gave it a shot to play without them, and the last few times I've done that and not had any problems, including at the US Open, where I played and walked around on concrete all day long.
