Had dealt with right shoulder pain (of course, its table tennis) and saw Brett Clarkes video on the golden point rule and how the use of the upper arm can lead to problems in table tennis. I have been working on keeping my right elbow more down and in a consistent place during the swing and it has helped with my shoulder pain as I dont raise my right elbow higher than my shoulder. Last night was the first time I played in a while without having pain after. I do have to move my body more to get to the ball though, but thats what I should be doing.

Recently got injured shoulder unrelated to table-tennis.

I cant stress enough how much a shoulder brace helps! You dont have to wear it when playing, but rest of the day it helps take so much strain out of regular activities.

Can you link us to Brett Clarke’s video on the golden point rule?

Good to hear! Addressing your technique is always a GREAT place to start when experiencing nagging pains.

Perhaps I should add that I have been practicing this by putting a rolled up towel under my upper arm. My arm is not flat against my body, but forward and away from my body a bit. Then I shadow swing to get the feel of keeping the elbow fairly stationary, then take the towel out and try to replicate the feel without it.

Came across this when it first came out, years ago - and it really does work, especially if you're close to the table. That elbow position is also about right as a ready position for serve return. Just about the only drill you can do while sitting in an armchair...

Maybe Aussies sound similar but I've been watching a lot of this guy recently.. He kinda sounds like Brett in the previous video.

injured my shoulder too from flat hitting. Hope to lessen the pain with this technique if I can learn it.

Apply prevention, rest, ice, compression and later on some light exercise.

Prevent - activities that cause pain.
Rest - give enough rest to the area
Ice - use ice or heat packs regularly
Compress - enough to reduce swelling
Exercise - stretch and very light reps.
